The book of Esther is somewhat of a favourite in Jewish and Christian circles. And there’s no doubt Esther has attained hero even messianic status with both groups. Yet, a closer inspection of this rather bizarre text reveals that a Genocide and Ethnic Cleansing took place on a grand scale. Christians seamlessly read this and see God’s hand in the destruction of the Jew’s enemies. But, I ask you, is this really God? In my opinion it is not. This is not God, but rather an ancient belief system of destroying one’s enemies, celebrating their demise and living happily ever after. The book of Esther is in clear contradiction to the teaching of Jesus Christ who gave us very different instructions when dealing with our enemies.

The book of Esther then for me, is a tale of ancient warfare with unrealistic expectations and mass murder. Even most Rabbi’s considered Esther folklore and agree that it was imbued with the Jewish dream of destroying their enemies. The storyline of Esther, is that Mordecai her Uncle hears of a plot to destroy the Jews so he sends Esther to seek an audience with the King. The King is smitten by her and ends up marrying her. Haman, the perpetrator who intended to kill the Jews is ousted and hung. Apart from Haman, whose evil intentions were only confirmed by Mordecai, there is no evidence that any other member of that community wanted the Jews dead. Yet, the entire non-Jewish population of Shushan, Persia, 75,811 (ironically modern day Iran, only much smaller) were slaughtered at Esther’s request. Collective punishment, death by association, kill or be killed is the motto of Esther’s story.
