House History for property in Park Road, Mount Lawley

House History for property in Park Road, Mount Lawley Park Road was one of the earliest streets in Mount Lawley to be developed, as it was ideally located with close proximity to the railway line and Guildford Road. Number 25 was typical of the Federation Queen Anne style, in which English architectural sensibility merged with the more extravagant elements of American Queen Anne. Oh she is pretty...Ellensbrook in Margaret River dates from 1857 and is testament to the early pioneering spirit. The strength of character shown by Ellen, Fanny, and Edith Bussell have literally shaped the building and its use. #ellensbrookhomestead #ntwa #margaretriver #collectedhistories #southwest

And we're done...the Working History conference in Melbourne has been, in equal parts, challenging and inspiring. Thanks to PHA (WA) for helping me get there. What a wonderful introduction to the organisation. Please add your name to the letter to the Hon. Albert Jacob MLA to try and stop the demolition of another historic building that is inadequately protected!

Thank you everyone for the fantastic responses so far. If you have not added your name to the Edith Cowan House Petition, now is your chance. We will be delivering the letter along with constructive community comments to the Minister this afternoon. Have your say by clicking here

This petition has been created in response to the recent proposal to demolish the 130 year old Edith Cowan House on Malcolm Street in West Perth. Perth Urbanist will be submitting a letter to the Minister for Environment and Heritage.

Edith Cowan House has significant cultural and historic value as the family home of Edith Cowan and her husband who built the house. They lived there for most of the period of 1893-1919. The building is a two storey brick and limestone victorian gothic style property, with a 1958 modern addition to the rear which is used to host an art gallery.

Edith Cowan was a politician, philanthropist, social activist and outspoken campaigner for the rights of women and children – she was a transformative figure in Australian life and politics.

The gloves are off!

Cotton Gloves - should you use them with archives or not? Cotton gloves are useful in a few circumstances but the SRO prefers staff and researchers to have clean hands or use nitrile gloves when handling most archival materials. This blog from the National Archives UK gives a good explanation why:

The 2016 City of Stirling Heritage Awards recognised outstanding contributions to heritage within the City. Special congratulations to Mount Lawley Primary School for their collective efforts to rebuild the school following the devastating fire in 2012. And to Ian Merker, inaugral member of the Mount Lawley Society, who was awarded the Education and Promotion of Heritage honour as a tribute to his unfailing dedication to heritage protection. 100899PD: The congregation outside Perth Baptist Church, Museum Street, Perth, 1929 ::...

The revelation that the house currently under investigation was owned by the Perth Baptist Church prompted a little digging. The residence was used as the manse for the Pastor of the Perth Baptist Church for fifteen years from 1952 onwards. This is a picture of the church, which was located in Museum Street, and is no longer standing. The Church was opened in May 1899. A forced land resumption by the State was imposed to make way for the Cultural Centre. A brass plate on the pillar of the Alexander Library marks the original site of the first Baptist Church in WA. #collectedhistories #househistories #perthhistory #localhistory Please see copyright information on the State Library of Western Australia’s website. Trove is an incredibly valuable resource for anyone interested in historical research; for historians it is vital research tool. We ask the Liberals to reverse the cuts to the National Library of Australia. #fundtrove

Show the Liberals that messing with historians and artists is a bad idea.

Happy #heritageweek! As we are busy celebrating our heritage, I thought I would take the opportunity to post a pic of one of my favourite buildings. The Baird's Building is a beautiful example of federation architecture at its best. The home of the Bairds Company from 1921 onwards, it is one of WA's earliest retail sites. It is also the new home of @StateHeritage so check out their website for the full history of this iconic building #collectedhistories #socialhistory #ifthesewallscouldtalk #pertharchitecture

The grand Mount Lawley home known as 'Manulla' was built for this handsome chap in 1905. Jarlath Stephen Duffy (1868-1949) was a decorated war hero. In civillian life he was a successful auctioneer and business man. Luckily, his beautiful home still stands today, and has gone on to house many wonderful families over the years.

I know many of you, including the members of @mountlawleysociety have been devestated to learn of the proposed demolition of 60-62 Cheriton Street, Perth. Despite the best efforts of @cityofvincent to prevent the demolition from occuring, they have been unable to block this application because these excellent examples of the Federation Queen Anne style have never been given heritage protection, or included on the heritage register.
I urge you to take action, and contact the Hon. Albert Jacob MLA, who is the Minister for Heritage, email: [email protected] and ask him to intervene and provide an emergency heritage listing on the State Register.
Please act before these beautiful homes are lost forever.

What's in a name? The latest house under investigation is located in Mount Lawley and is named 'Wynyates'. A little digging has revealed that the family's ancestral home is this rather grand Early Tudor abode in England, 'Compton Wynyates.' What is the connection? #collectedhistories #ifthesewallscouldtalk #whatliesbeneath #househistories
