IMDEX Chief Geoscientist, Dave Lawie, was crowned 2026's Champion of Innovation at the Global Resources Innovation Expo last night.

Dave was recognised for his transformative and sustained contributions to integrating geoscience, analytics and technology. He is also a global authority on innovative ways to address the global copper supply challenge, and on communicating the mining industry’s role in a low-carbon future.

Marcela’s message to future talent: believe in your potential and take the first step.

Marcela studied geology in northern Argentina and joined IMDEX in 2022 as a Technical Service Representative, stepping into a field‑based role with no prior diamond drilling or fluids experience.

She works at Filo del Sol, a high‑altitude project in the Andes. It wasn’t easy at first. The environment was demanding, unfamiliar and male‑dominated. But through hands‑on learning, support from her team and determination, Marcela built strong technical and operational capability and is now an IMDEX Team Lead, mentoring others and helping colleagues grow.

Today, the long days, tough conditions and time away from family are balanced by teamwork, trust and a strong sense of belonging.

At Anglo American’s Sakatti project in Sodankylä, Finland, directional core drilling was used to deliver high resolution core data along planned TBM tunnel alignments.

Where traditional surface drilling can leave critical gaps in geotechnical understanding, DCD improves data coverage and density along the tunnel path, reducing uncertainty and supporting safer tunnel construction.

The program was delivered through close collaboration between Anglo American project geologists, drilling contractor KATI Oy, and IMDEX field engineers.

Unplanned blast hole deviation was causing this site in Chile considerable over-break, under-break, fragmentation and dilution.

Magnetic survey tools were producing inaccurate results and required additional personnel and resources.

Operating costs were high. They needed a better solution.
