CASE STUDY | Match the Pattern, Not Just the Colour
This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Yvette Ettridge and her daughter, Jada from Narrogin to the WASP Hair Showroom (Perth) to explore our latest Premium Collection and find the most suitable extension colour match for Jada's naturally occurring light 🍓strawberry blonde hair with copper-gold warmth.
With more than 40 years of experience in the hair industry, Yvette selected a combination of natural blonde and Soft Copper Blonde to recreate the natural warmth, reflection, and tonal variation already present within Jada's hair.
✨️This case highlights an important principle in professional colour matching:
The goal is not simply to match a colour.
The goal is to recreate a naturally occurring colour pattern.
🎨Colour Mapping
Jada's natural hair contained:
• Soft golden reflections
• Delicate copper warmth
• Natural tonal variation throughout the hair
Understanding these characteristics formed the foundation of the colour design.
🎈Colour Layering
Natural hair is rarely one flat colour.
To recreate natural depth and dimension, #18 Natural Blonde and Soft Copper Blonde were strategically layered throughout the installation.
For the nape and side sections, a solid Soft Copper Blonde placement was used to ensure there would be no visible blonde exposure when the hair is worn in a high ponytail, helping the extensions remain virtually undetectable.
Within the interior and upper side sections, #18 Natural Blonde was positioned underneath, with Soft Copper Blonde placed on top, creating a multidimensional light strawberry blonde effect.
💡Custom Colour Blend & Light Reflection
No single shade could accurately reproduce Jada's natural colour.
The combination of #18 Natural Blonde and Soft Copper Blonde created a customised blend that reflected the warmth, softness, and tonal variation already present within her hair.
The lighter blonde tones also introduced reflective highlights, visually softening the copper tones and creating a more natural, seamless result.

In reality, experienced extension professionals often use extension techniques as a customised solution to address a wide range of client concerns — including sparse areas, uneven density, lack of face-framing fullness, and overall balance throughout the haircut.

The Importance of Texture Matching in Extension Blending
A seamless extension result is not created through colour matching alone.
Texture, movement, density, and natural hair behaviour all play an important role in achieving a natural-looking blend over time.
In this transformation:
• The client naturally has textured, frizz-prone hair with irregular movement and natural expansion throughout the hair
• Rather than forcing the hair into a straighter finish, Franco chose to work with the client’s natural texture pattern
• Straight tape extensions were professionally customised and reshaped prior to installation to better mimic the client’s natural movement and texture behaviour
• For certain clients with natural texture or curl patterns, professionally reshaping straight extensions can sometimes help create a softer and more seamless blend when suitable textured extension options are limited or unavailable
Key technical considerations during texture integration include:
• Understanding how the client’s natural hair behaves after washing and in humid conditions
• Matching texture, movement, and density — not just colour
• Maintaining the integrity, elasticity, and long-term wearability of the extension hair during texture reshaping
• Avoiding over-processing and unnecessary chemical stress on the hair
• Creating a result that remains soft, wearable, and natural over time
Aftercare also plays an important role in maintaining textured extension blends:
• Moisture balance and hydration
• Anti-frizz maintenance
• Curl and texture support
• Suitable styling techniques for long-term blend consistency
