🐟A single drop of water can reveal an entire ecosystem.
UWA researchers are using environmental DNA (eDNA) to understand how climate change and human activity reshaping fish biodiversity around the world - all without catching a single fish.
By analysing DNA naturally found in water, researchers can quickly monitor freshwater ecosystems and help guide future conservation efforts.
It's a fascinating example of how UWA research is combining innovation and environmental science to help protect our planet. 🌏

🌿World Nature Conservation Day
Some of the best memories at UWA weren't planned.
They happened between lectures. Walking to class. Studying on Oak Lawn. Watching the sun set over Matilda Bay.
Looking back, it's easy to forget just how lucky we were to study on one of Australia's most beautiful university campuses.
Nestled between Kings Park and Matilda Bay, UWA is home to more than stunning heritage buildings- it's surrounded by thriving natural environment that few universities can call their own.
🦚The peacocks have become unofficial UWA celebrities, wandering grounds and appearing in countless graduation photos.
🦢Along the river, black swans-WA's state emblem and a symbol of resilience and uniqueness-glide across Matilda Bay.
🐬if you were lucky, you might have spotted dolphins from the foreshore, seasonal jellyfish beneath the surface, or even the occasional shark reminding us just how rich this ecosystem really is.
It's easy to overlook these moments when you're rushing to your lecture. Looking back, they're part of what made studying at UWA so special.
This World Nature Conservation Day, wherever you are in the world, take a moment to appreciate and protect the natural places around you- whether that's reducing waste, supporting local conservation efforts, planting something new or simply spending time in nature.

🌏UWA research is helping how gastric cancer is detected and prevented in Vietnam.
A new partnership between UWA's Marshall centre for Infectious Disease Research and training and the VinMec Healthcare System will support early detection and prevention programs across Vietnam- targeting one of the country's leading causes of cancer-related deaths.
The initiative builds on Professor Barry Marshall's Nobel Prize-winning discovery linking H.pylori bacteria to gastric disease, now being translated into large-scale healthcare impact across a national hospital network.
By combining UWA's research expertise with VinMec's clinical reach, the partnership focuses on turning scientific discovery into real-world health outcomes for communities.
It's another example of UWA research making a global impact far beyond the classroom and laboratory.

🐦In case you missed it...
UWA recently announced an exciting new partnership with Amazon to support the Corridors for Carnaby's conservation project, led by Professor Kingsley Dixon.
The project aims to help protect one of Western Australia's most iconic birds- the endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo-by restoring and reconnecting habitat across the state.
For many WA alumni, spotting a flock of Carnaby's overhead is a familiar sight. This world-first initiative will help ensure future generations can continue to experience these remarkable birds in the wild.
It's also a great example of how UWA researchers are working with industry and community to create real-world impact for conservation.
