Budget 2026: Proposed 30% Minimum Tax on Family Trusts
The 2026 Federal Budget has proposed a major change for discretionary (family) trusts.
From 1 July 2028, trustees of discretionary trusts may be required to pay a minimum 30% tax on trust income β even if distributions are made to lower-income beneficiaries.
Whatβs important to know:
β This is currently a proposal, not law
β Individual beneficiaries would receive tax credits for tax already paid
β Some trusts and income types are excluded
β A proposed restructuring rollover relief period may run from 2027β2030
Most importantly:
π¨ Donβt rush into restructuring based on a Budget announcement alone.
The legislation has not yet been drafted, and the rules may change significantly before becoming law.
Right now, the best approach is:
π Stay informed
π Understand how it may affect your structure
π Wait for final legislation before making major decisions
If you operate through a family trust, now is the time to start the conversation β not panic.

One of the biggest payroll changes in years is almost here.

β Ensure payroll and bookkeeping staff understand the new rules

FBT Deadline Reminder: Is Your Business Ready?
The Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) year runs from 1 April to 31 March, and if your business provided employees with non-cash benefits, an FBT return may be due.

Common benefits that may trigger FBT:
π Company cars used privately
π½ Staff entertainment and functions

β Incorrect reporting can lead to penalties and unexpected tax issues
If youβre unsure whether your business needs to lodge an FBT return, now is the time to review it β before the deadline arrives.
