What did does a vote or preference vote make? At 4:30 I joined many others at the Midland Town Hall to hear mayor announcement - of Tanya Richardson as Mayor ! Wonderful! The return of Ward Councillors Ian Johnson & Rashelle Predonovik Predovnik is what the ward wanted along with Sarah H ! Congratulations ! A range of new fresh candidates who will bring new ideas! I was 3rd on the Ward list !
I achieved the reform with all “ mayoral candidates” but 1 agreeing to return to 5 minutes for people to speak ( catalyst for why I stepped into this debacle) ! What is learnt ?
I came away from running for council richer - I knowing my local better .. the rich tapestry of people who make it up & the common good that binds us & it’s weakness & plus my own! We really need to invent better ways forward !
I trust that’s there is a brighter better way forward this Council heads ! Let’s all be kinder to each other &
I move forward .. many thanks to all those who voted & those who voted for me !
At least this saves time recounting the entire process, after it has been completed. Then what’s done is done!
City of Swan - WA Electoral Commission statement about 2023 City of Swan election delays The City has entered a restricted burning period. You are not permitted to burn without a burning permit. This period runs from October 1 - November 30.
Now is an opportunity for me to “ sincerely thank those who supported me to run for Council & everyone ( in my campaign office - you know who you are! 🎈) those who put up my signs, helped to hand out leaflets& offered words of encouragement or helped me navigate my way. I am very grateful & appreciative ! See photo here I am collecting my signs - with injured shoulder ! It’s not easy taking on political parties in elections or returning candidates .. ! It’s been an interesting experience & I’ve learnt lots about the Ward & met some really great people & got to know others better (in good & interesting ways). Today after visiting the count at the Midland Town Hall the many staff & AEC people Re counting, finding ballots and scrutineers - wonderful to see the machinery ( people & a counting machine ) how safe our country is - truly blessed ! A sunny day, doors open and a wonderful grand lady (not our town hall) but the incredible Christine H (reassuring checks ethics honesty steadfast ) CoS CEO checking too plus candidates .. a great City is Swan & with huge potential it’s about time we created a vision for our place … let’s step forward & get on with what council should be doing! So community ( people like me ) can get on with what we want to be doing-advocating to make things better…
Have you heard of the Nolan Principles? Decluttering at home offers reminders ..Well the counting is still happening in CoS mayor vote TBC and the Ward vote is up in the air ! I am really curious if under these new reforms WA government has given some thought to improving the standards of behaviour in public life ? Given there are stories and learning continually arising ( LGEMA WA) was espousing these 7 for public office holders a while back, based on a 1994, UK committee report. It would be so beneficial. After running as a Ward candidate think it might be useful if we had as a criteria to act as a reminder mirror ! ???
A reminder if you haven’t voted! There are the little things in life you can do .. just like chaos theory & the butterfly 🦋!!! They are still taking your votes until 6 pm ! Make a difference.. take that envelope in and vote 1 Lynn Deering for City of Swan - Midland/Guildford Ward!
Don’t sit this one out ! In my campaign I raise the use of my interest in “co design practices” being more strongly applied and promoted in City of Swan! Sharing this concept with a group of teens a burst of chatter came forward with a range of brilliant ideas it was clear how much they wanted to see a better Midland! At the time the teens also mentioned how their parents or house mate haven’t voted in local elections - as “they are unsure of who” or that the opinion was “it doesn’t make too much difference” to them.
If this is you - please know your vote does make a difference. It can bring new ideas, better ways of doing things, insight and with an independent candidate who will listen, represent you and inform council decisions! Today is the last day if that envelope is just sitting under that pile .. take for a ride to the polling booth or drop in for a new one ☝️ !
There's still time to make your vote count ✅
Drop off your vote at the City of Swan Administration Building by 5pm today.
If you can't make it in, there will be a ballot box tomorrow at the Midland Sports Complex where you can drop off your vote before 6pm.

Duncan of Deep Salon Lifestyle Store is one of those local business operators who has helped by putting up my signs, alongside words of support. “Thank you!”
His salon, is located in one of Guildford’s newer building’s & sympathetic to the area’s character, in a tree lined street reflective of the area.
Council can play a significant role in supporting local businesses and start ups- including attracting new & appropriate business types. So please don’t leave that voting envelope sit there in the pile of letters! Support me - local independent to make a difference.

In South Guildford for my final leaflet drop & looking at our boundaries, caught up with Steve who shared a walk of Site 386 Bush Forever (BF) located within South Guildford, along Kalamunda Rd, that is slowly being degraded with dumping of rubbish & off road vehicles.Steve took me to check on vegetation early today. See Flower photos The site identified as part of the 495 sites of rare, intact & biological diverse areas- site 386 sits nearby cemetery ! Our Ward includes Perth Airport which has taken over our BF site. Flowers were out, no weeds just natural areas of trees just hidden as cars whizz through. Site 386 is slowly being degraded due to disregard, it was once part of Airport’s preservation precincts - now push to develop in another Plan. Did you know CoS has 8 Bush Forever sites? Last week I mentioned Talbot(306) there is also Melaleca Park (399)Kirby(097) and 089 and 4 Northern Jarrah areas located in Gidgegannup?.. We have so much natural rare & unique tourism potential located in Ward & City just there seems no real over all “vision or plan for joint management “ which recognises our wealth of natural heritage on our doorstep! Talking with everyone around here they enjoy the surroundings birdlife, native animals & flowers especially being on the doorstep ! Imagine the flow on to our residents eco & social if our Council or new Mayor could ..be bigger picture beyond retail or strategic?

Bottle Brushes in Bloom ! Another amazing range of street trees are in the Swan View area Blackadder - Blanchard! Very tall large & at least 40 years plus. Sunday was cat cage building for Glenys & Peter who were yet to voted. Met Cassie who had her envelope sitting on the bench, after explaining I was community not party political & running because of the cut to community participation ( from 5 minutes to 3) plus reduced question time - she was going to complete & post it ! Note before early voting closes 20 October.A couple of trolleys dumped but used Send Snap Solve hope they will be gone ! Native gardens are plenty & beautiful for pollinators & birds. There are cut throughs, public open space & quiet areas of green Quarry Park, bowls on letter boxes for the birds! Large blocks with garages room for parking without being on the street & a variety of houses some back to the 80’s well established. I met Tim, who arrived in Aust as a 3 year old child from Poland & now is retired, he has been living in Swan View for 30 years he wasn’t going to vote however after hearing why it was important for our community! Yah ! Across the railway line sits the new Movida smaller homes& large sound wall a new community like Swan View once was, fewer trees & closer homes.. eventually it will one day be established too!
Many people are not aware of changes proposed for Morrison and Lloyd Street as part of East Link.. “Re Think East Link” contacted me to hear my views - I had heard about this a year ago & drove the route to be clear on the proposal, as it follows the road but then diverts through bushlands.. ? Re Think have researched the impact which is considerable both environmentally & on Perth Hills. Our Council needs to convey the voice & views of electors to the state - on matters. Road haulage and logistic industry’s seem to be carving out & through areas of our Ward? Want to know more see below
! Swan View earns its name from the view historically the eastern railway siding! Out here today on my last leaflet drop & a pop across to the Airport segment of the ward, if time to a Bush Forever site. Today I’m hoping to catch those who will sit down & fill in the voting slip & return it!. Catalyst for me to run in this election was the reduction of speaking time of residents & debating time of issues in meetings. The same “7 versus 6 style blocking allowed this change to reduce community participation? Why? I am non political party aligned & want to be your community representative. Strange how so many pamphlets say they want to hear our voices when they chose to cut deputation time from 5 to 3 minutes? I need your vote! So I want to return community’s voice and increase decision making through co design & improved accountability! I need your vote ! We need your vote Lynn 1 and return Ian Johnson mark him 2 !
Team L D & I J !
Once a station site Koongamia is full of surprises.. Door knocking & leaflet droping today is about signs on doors by shift workers 💤 , potting mix on verandahs as gardeners trying to catch the rains & car cleaning! Where are the kids? Koongamia was very quiet without the school & parent centre, being open - normally busy as!!. The lack of people took me by surprise & “not the usual”, I worked here for 4 years with a young parenting & return to education program at Clayton Hub! Called into the local shop, meeting Catherine ( a past student) - she’s working part time & caught up about a few past students! Onward leaflet dropping, the big green oval, many large gums drap their leaves at Lloyd Penn Park with 2 new playgrounds one for little ones, a skate park and new larger adventure playground 🛝 sounds of mum’s with their children sing out! I use to know so many Aboriginal families living here some moved on & others I hear are busy at work, in mining, health or education.. etc There is a sense of space &many large trees everywhere, with beautiful weatherboards tucked here &there, brick homes on large blocks, new homes taking shape -density infil . More chats with Kevin who is cleaning down copper wire for scrap for $.. things are difficult so extra cash comes in handy! Small cottage houses & looking up the bushlands of the escarpment rise-Koongamia is a mix of social housing& new owners it’s being revitalised. I hope it’s does not loose it’s sense of place - choices of different housing that is sensitive to local characteristics, that does not flatten & remove wetlands or divert water ways supports a healthy community & a wonderful mix of people. Would be so easy to create green corridors here
A stroll in Stratton had me chatting to older residents taking in the cool beneath trees & dog walking, laughing cycling children were out & about, using the many cut throughs that lead to parks & streets. Sue had voted, Charlie isn’t interested until we discuss what Councils do & Bob takes my brochure & is supportive ! Yah Lots of playgrounds Kangarroo & Bombay beneath native trees which provide relief to the birds & shaded paths. I reported a leaking & broken fountain using the app Send Snap & Solve ! A great quick solution finder on local problems like broken, repairs, shopping trolleys and other ! A striking feature of Stratton is native vegetation & its location looking up to the hills - showing a slow trail of housing developments creeping up its sides. A notable beautiful of Stratton & Swan View is Talbot Reserve - if you have not seen this reserve then do yourself a favour ! Stratton is full of young growing families ..A chat with a group of young woman about to catch a bus helped with directions & I was on my way back to the school hub …and the large playing fields. Traffic begins to return those who have left for work & pace is fast flowing & to nearby developments like Movida stretching across the grey sands ..
Hi
Yesterday was hot ..as this video indicates..I’ve had lots of people email me about the “Jane Brook “ ficas macrophylla “ - fact there is another in that street as part of a verge! Just so you can appreciate the tree is located centrally in a residential road that goes around it ! I’m adding this to my tree photo collection.. for next week’s discussion! Up at Stratton and Swan View .. today to find more trees, streams.. and native reserves ..
Today was young Mums & baby’s in the morning in Jane Brook, followed by dog walkers! The water and grass areas allow for playgrounds or open space, verges with shade & water for birds..lawns but a real treat was this street with a massive tree! Isn’t it amazing ? Thinking this may be the best tree, road & houses I’ve seen in Perth !
Around the corner to Les discussed verges& amenity, he also told me how he had decided not to ride from Jane Brook or surrounding area after riding with a cyclist mate! “Our roads cut through areas, there’s little hope of cycling 🚴♀️ getting around between areas is non existent. It’s all busy roads was so stressful!” I shared ideas about green corridors & ways to support safe cycling. It’s about time to revitalise our thinking especially since we have a strong local cyclists community across the CoS! Local legend Jai Hindly too! Imagine an annual Midland cycle event and traffic free city for just one day? What do you think ? Oh yes take a look at that tree!
Aidan was catching up on some mowing he has lived in Koongamia & moved into his house in Middle Swan - he loves coming home to the space his house provides! Grass trees, spots of bushland & large verges with good tree canopy including a well established green buffer between the Roe & homes.
Vellgrove Park is centrally located encircled by older trees offering shade to playground happily occupied & the park reflects space. Scattered throughout are older trees & paths some littered with ho**ey nuts -due to the Black Cockatoos! I turn a corner to find new sets of modern apartments, every now & then, tucked in are new smaller homes- infil is happening & house choices. A shift in street scape with less trees, loss of shaded fronts & verges. New homes while few in number at this time, the contrast of “old to new housing” is stark.I believe new developments should reflect existing character, look and feel to retain a sense of place & respond to climate change - encouraging trees, positions on blocks can reduce heatsink. Middle Swan is a “little oasis “ encircled by busy main roads of Lloyd, The Roe & Morrison. I walk on, a few chats with a few people indicated many unaware of the Orange route or Lloyd St expansion, confusion on the voting ( Yes or No ) but now some are aware of the local election & to vote Lynn In ! On to Jane Brook - getting the steps in today !
Hi! 👋
I am excited to share a bit about me and why I - Lynn Deering am running for council in the Midland Guildford ward!
I have raised my family & lived in Woodbridge for 23 years. I have chosen to run for council as I believe I can bring a fresh approach, contribute by my relevant professional experience and want to make a difference to restore community participation, improve standards of governance & accountability.
After running my business for 20 years, I recently decided to semi retire this give me time to be available & follow matters through. Professionally, I have worked in various roles from addressing unemployment, small business development, education, and community service in the Not-for-Profit, government and private sectors in CEO, Director or senior roles. I am known for being strategic, creative and a problem solver “professional & easy going” and an excellent mentor!
I am not a member of a political party, my focus is toward making the Midland - Guildford ward a better place to live, work and play.
Locally I have been involved with:
Smith Family- Swan View High School, Midland Youth services, Koongamia young parenting programs, Clayton - ie Return to Education
Advocated on heritage, wildlife protection, arts development, better planning, and tourism development.
President of Woodbridge Ratepayers and Friends of Woodbridge bushlands.
Key matters to address which I have identified are:
*Council – improve financial accountability & restore community participation in decision making.
*Safety - improve lighting, strengthen community connection and safety.
*Climate change –develop a stronger, more strategic response to climate change e.g., local extreme weather and emergency response.
*Connectivity - improve walkability and cycle routes across our wards.
*Development – get action on the realignment of freight rail line, reduce traffic and stop the expansion of industry within residential areas.
*Environment – to investigate a green corridor policy, re-generating green space to protect native animals, “Bush Forever” sites and bushlands for our community to enjoy.
*Planning – sensitive development respecting place and people and giving equal consideration to residents and developers.
*Service and facilities – ensure our community groups, cultural centres and sporting clubs are well-maintained, inclusive, and accessible.
*Arts and culture - support local creatives and innovators through enhancing open spaces and activate areas.
But I really want to hear your views and am happy to be contacted on my page

Out on the hustings this afternoon in Midland. The sounds of mowers, whipper snippers and smell of freshly cut grass everywhere. Great amenity -shaded grassed playgrounds, sports & bowling club large open spaces. Met several older adults who expressed feeling a little isolated, many with distances from their older children. A laugh with Ivy hearing about the changes she had seen in her 30 years, & of her Yugoslav parents arriving here. Later Paul shared his story of arriving from Vietnam & hard work to house ownership. Feeling safe & making Midland safer at night was raised by several young men & couples including walkability. Laneways that connect streets how do we address safety, connect people & build a shared sense of safety for everyone - a high priority for Council. Did leaflets and door knocks in Woodbridge and parts of Midland Town today! Thanks for all the offers of a drink from Sheryl & Florence!
Residents in Woodbridge raised concerns about paving and developments that ruin fences. Others spoke of about the brilliance of our Woodbridge playground! Something that I supported as part of the Woodbridge Ratepayers Association.
I also started door-knocking in Midland today. I chatted to David and Shirley about the number of blocks being allowed to sit vacant, not fenced or be utilized for way too long.
There were discussions of liveability, with strong support for my walkability and connection between Midland and Swan Valley and better use of the Midland Workshops as a tourism hub reflecting our food bowl and community! Midland has enormous potential just needs a fresh approach!

Walking in Bushmead is a delight, chats to walkers, runners, gym bound and lots of Dads with prams & child walkers ! Amongst banksia woodlands, nearby walkways, native gardens & verges so attractive! Features of run-off waterways & shaded trees create with dog exercise & children’s playgrounds throughout. I can hear Black cockatoos calling. I pushed for CoS to increase / make available wildlife signs - temporary ones available now as it takes time for MRoads to respond although a slow down sign on Midland Street indicates wildlife is a local concern. More creative ways to allow wildlife to live alongside us needs to be given priority under road tunnels & bridges. Such developments with paths, verges trees and amenity, alongside wildlife removal prior to development & of course preservation & protection! The amazing rehabilitation work of Bushmead Conservation Cobbers was also on view .. a reminder to head back for our street tree planting..in Woodbridge
I am out in Bellevue handing leaflets out & chatting to people! Something I am really passionate about is arts and culture. I want to see stronger recognition of our local artists and art events in our Wards across the City of Swan.
We have so many local creatives who are not fully recognised by Council nor in our civic places. I have established community centres and art programs to connect and improve vitality of areas. I know this can be done to activate and rejuvenate. A great example of artist and entrepreneurship is Gayle Masons at the Bellevue Art Space!
Looking forward to meeting more Bellevue residents on Saturday! Please check in to my Facebook to know more ☺️
Greg (who isn’t on Facebook) sent me this video after he had been delivering leaflets across Guildford.
Very grateful of friends like Greg who have turned up and helped me delivering leaflets and showing their support.
Thank you to the wonderful community of Midland Guildford Ward for helping me with this campaign. Together we can make a difference!
Hazelmere has such a distinct feel, with its lush green, old growth and so many birds 🌿
I met Patrick and a host of others door knocking yesterday. One resident called Mark told me about these amazing trees being planted over 30 years ago. I heard requests to improve the levels of paths, something much needed by many of the areas aging residents for walking & gopher safety.
More chats about encroachment of industry on the Helena River, the cutting down of trees and then not being replaced on verges. Increased traffic with people cutting through, an area once a rural buffer of 1883, changing quickly with density infil. Which should it be? Mixed residential or industrial or both?
Hazelmere leaflet drop and door knocking complete for the day✔️
Collected my leaflets which are hot off the press 📰 Thank you to everyone who has offered to put up signs and deliver them for me.
The community is in motion with friends, neighbours and even Grandkids being paid to deliver them in Viveash & Guildford.
I got to chat to residents in Woodbridge, Midland, Swanview & Bellevue on Tuesday which was great hearing their ideas, thoughts and feedback.
If you are interested in lending a hand with the campaign let me know! ☺️
