National Burns Awareness Month

Burn injuries can happen in seconds — at home, at work, outdoors, or in the kitchen — but many burns are preventable with greater awareness and safety.

During National Burns Awareness Month, we’re encouraging everyone to learn how to prevent burns and know what to do if one occurs.

Simple steps can make a big difference:
Keep hot drinks and cooking areas away from children
Test bath water temperature before use
Use sunscreen and stay protected from extreme heat
Handle chemicals, heaters, and electrical equipment safely
Check smoke alarms regularly
Knowing basic first aid is also essential:
✔ Cool the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes
✔ Remove clothing or jewellery near the burn if safe to do so
✔ Cover with a clean, non-stick dressing
✘ Do not apply ice, butter, or creams
Severe burns require urgent medical attention.
