City of Gods and Monsters (Book 1, House of Devils) - Kayla Edwards

I found this book on audible, and it had always intrigued me, so I thought why not.

Kayla Edwards started writing City of Gods and Monsters when she was in high school and has since written other upper YA fantasy novels. Kayla also loves to spend her time in nature, traveling, and watching her favourite TV shows with her husband.


Loren is nothing special, is a human living in Angelthene surrounded by many supernatural creatures – witches, vampires, werewolves etc. Life isn’t easy for Loren and nor is it the safest but she lives her life, with her friends as best as she can.

Until one night out with her friends, and everything changes. Trying to seek the safety of home and not out on the streets of Angelthene late at night, Loren and her friends are soon confronted with trouble. Though while Loren escapes relatively unscathed her friend Sabine, is kidnapped when the group of Darkslayers are unable to lure Loren away with them.

Loren despite being human, won’t rest, won’t stop until she has her friend back. But this is where things start to get interesting for Loren, one of the most notorious and ruthless Darkslayer is caught up in everything – Darien Cassel, the leader of the Devils.

Loren hopes that with Darien’s help, and the rest of the Devils in his group, that she can find her friend before it is too late. Yet, Darien’s past creeps up on him; as does the truth of where Loren truly came from.

Can they discover what is truly happening in Angelthene, deal with their truths or will the darkness of Angelthene destroy them and Angelthene itself forever.....





“City of Gods and Monsters” is a supernatural YA fantasy story about an FMC that is so much more and so much stronger than what she has been lead to believe; of course out of all the strong supernatural creatures in the story, it's the weak human that will save them all. Maybe it’s just me about from the get-go this story screamed Crescent City to me, there’s quite a few similarities to me. I enjoyed reading how everyone kept underestimating the FMC, and she was able to find her strength what literally went to the ends of the earth for her friends and to do what was right. Overall, it was a good read, with solid world building and told at a steady pace, though at times it was slightly predictable. I definitely need to get into the second book and see if it diversifies from Crescent City 2.
