Understanding spinal disc changes.
Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and help support movement while absorbing load through the spine.
A healthy disc contains a soft centre called the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a stronger outer layer known as the annulus fibrosus.
With age, loading, or injury, discs can undergo structural changes.
Disc degeneration refers to the gradual loss of hydration and disc height.
A disc bulge or protrusion occurs when the disc extends slightly beyond its normal boundary.
A disc herniation (or extrusion) occurs when inner disc material moves through the outer layer and may irritate nearby nerves.
Sequestration refers to a fragment of disc material separating completely from the disc.
These changes are commonly seen on imaging and do not always correlate with pain or symptoms.
If you are experiencing back pain, an assessment by a qualified health professional can help determine the most appropriate management.

Ever wondered what doctors mean when they talk about disc degeneration, disc bulges or herniated discs?
Spinal discs sit between the vertebrae and act like shock absorbers, helping the spine move while distributing load.
A healthy disc contains a soft gel-like centre called the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a stronger outer layer called the annulus fibrosus.
Over time, or with repeated loading or injury, discs can undergo structural changes.
Disc degeneration
This refers to gradual loss of disc hydration and height.
Disc bulge (protrusion)
The disc extends slightly beyond its normal boundary but the outer layer remains intact.
Disc herniation (extrusion)
Inner disc material pushes through the outer layer and may irritate nearby nerves.
Sequestration
A small fragment of disc material separates completely from the disc.
Importantly, these changes are commonly seen on scans and do not always cause pain or symptoms.
If you are experiencing back pain, a professional assessment can help determine the most appropriate management for your situation.
