Every evening, a new masterpiece.

Great Central Road today - about 50km east of Tjukayirla Roadhouse. Clear skies, decent road conditions, horses, camels, rockholes, geocaches, sunsets and sunrises. People travelling on motorbikes, 4WDs, some towing, some not. Many in small convoys, others travelling solo. Australia’s longest shortcut.

Today’s highlight was a diversion north off the Great Central Road to find the Jutson geocache. Camped at Nullye. Not the best camp but the sky put on a sunset show. Sun was setting at 4:30 when we arrived!

Who else does their own bush servicing?

Life on the road isn’t always campfires and sunsets.

Thankfully David carries the spares, tools, and know-how to keep us moving. After 29 years of outback travel, we’ve learned that a little preparation goes a long way.

Camped at these beautiful breakaways called The Terraces, 50km from Leonora.

Over millions of years, mineral-rich groundwater seeped through the landscape, leaving behind layers of hard silica and iron-rich deposits. As the softer surrounding material gradually weathered away, a series of stepped ledges and terraces were revealed, creating the striking formations seen today.

The result is a natural amphitheatre of layered rock, coloured in shades of red, orange, cream and gold, standing in stark contrast to the surrounding mulga country. The terraces catch the light beautifully at sunrise and sunset, when the textures and colours seem to glow.

It’s not a large attraction by outback standards, but that’s part of its appeal. Quiet, remote and rarely crowded, The Terraces offers a fascinating glimpse into the geological forces that have shaped Australia’s ancient interior.

And for travellers, it makes a memorable bush camp - one of those places where the landscape itself becomes the highlight of the evening.

The camping is free & dog friendly but there’s no services or facilities and the tracks vary after rain so 4wd is advised. There are 4wd tracks leading to many hidden gems - all mapped for you to explore confidently with the ExplorOz Traveller app.
