Great intimate calming practice guided by Rapha.
Back to Rapha Yin Yoga last night after a lengthy break 🧘‍♀️ 🙏🏾
Apart from physical and “testy” recognising of body tissue and muscle I have neglected, I had forgotten about the following 8 hours of pure bottom of the earth sleep that follows, not a wrinkle in the doona 💫
What a gentle and simple method to a balance of mind body and soul 💛
I am in for the best day today 🚀
Well, an update on the difference between a hip replacement 3yrs ago!! Before Yin Yoga, and now my other hip was replaced 3 weeks ago....first hip l had to use bbq, long tongs to get my nickers on my feet!! Laugh you may! BUT, this time I can touch the floor, so my hands and arms do the nickers this time round! 💕❤️ thank you Rapha and Yin Yoga!
I started with Rapha about 7 weeks ago. I have found that I feel taller, definitely more flexible. Now able to roll over in bed without difficulty, and most of all, I can get down and up from the floor with such ease, when playing with my three grandchildren. Love yoga with Rapha! Hooked!❤️💕

Through Yin Yoga and its long held passive stretches, we are taking preventative measures against the nature of the fascia to contract, either in the normal course of aging, through illness, immobilisation and/or stress. Furthermore, we detoxify the tissues, moisten it, feed it with nutrients, de-fixate and mobilise the joints and so much more.
The use of long held traction of the ligaments as back treatment therapy is not new eg. stretching the spinal column to relieve pressure on the spinal discs, followed by muscle training to strengthen the muscles around the spine. This same principle is employed in Yin Yoga as a preventative measure for all joints and tissues of our bodies, but also as a “therapy” for chronic back pain.

What is Yin Yoga?
"In the quietude lies the power and out of the quietude arises the power." (Confucius)
Yin Yoga – the quiet practice – draws our focus inwards, to connect to the true essence of ourselves.
As the pace in which we live, work and play becomes increasingly faster, finding stillness and a sense of equilibrium becomes harder and harder.
Yin Yoga is a meditative practice consisting of long held stretches without muscle tension, focusing on the deeper tissues of our body - strengthening, stretching and stimulating to encourage more flexibility and freedom of movement while simultaneously releasing deep tension of the body and relaxing the nervous system. Yin Yoga reduces stress while stimulating regeneration.
We learn to accumulate the subtle energy flow (chi flow) and to feel the enhanced energy flow in meridians. The stillness of the long held yin poses enables us to manipulate the flow of energy creating a deep level of calmness, focus and equanimity.
In the fast-paced, stressful world of the 21st century, yin yoga offers the perfect balance for teachers and students alike.
Yin & Yang
“when he is born, man is soft and weak;
In death , he becomes stiff and hard.
Then ten thousand creatures and all plants and trees
Are supple and soft in life,
But brittle and dry in death.
Truly, to be stiff and hard is the way of death;
To be soft and supple is the way of life.
Therefore, the weapon that is too hard will be broken,
And the tree with the hardest wood will be cut down first.
Truly, the hard and strong are cast down,
While the soft and weak rise to the top.
” Lao Tze
Our world is comprised of Yin and Yang. We find polarity in our language, our environment, in everything and everyone. This universal polarity and contrast blend harmoniously as epitomized by the yin and yang symbol.
In our western health culture, we mainly practice yang forms of exercise, whether it be some kind of sport and / or most forms of yoga (Ashtanga, Bikram, Vinyasa Flow, Power etc). The focus is on our muscles – strengthening and stretching through rhythmic, flowing and repetitive movements. This form of exercise is essential for our wellbeing (and in particular the muscles and bones) complements our fast-moving mentality and learned values.
Yang needs yin in order to exist, and yin needs yang in order to exist.
When both sides are in equilibrium, balance and harmony are achieved.
Yin Yoga complements every form of yang yoga. While we cannot say that one is better or worse than the other, we can say that both belong together intrinsically, creating harmony between body, mind and soul.
Yin Yoga (à la Paul Grilley) acknowledges and respects the uniqueness of our bodies and our individual bone structure. We learn to be playful with the poses, to go on a “search and rescue mission” inwards, listening to our bodies until we feel our individual natural alignment of the pose and then settle in for a while. Regardless of the aesthetics, we have found our perfect pose.
Every person has an individual and unique bone structure.
Every person has an individual and unique flexibility and agility.
Every person needs an individual and unique yoga practice.
Yin Yoga and Therapy
Do we believe that Yin Yoga has a therapeutic effect? Absolutely.
With Yin Yoga, we mainly train our yin tissues, the fascia. Included in the fascia are the myofascia tissues (muscles and fascia), tendons, ligaments and capsules. Fascia is mainly composed of collagen and gives the body structure, form and tension and stores kinetic energy and is effectively like a spring for the muscles. Fascia ensheathes our organs, nerves, arteries, divides the brain and holds it together and is, in various degrees the “glue” that holds our bodies together.
Even more fascinating, fascia is a 3 dimensional network of innumerable giant spider web-like nets that are interwoven and connected with one another down to a single cell. When we move one part of our body, it has an effect on the rest of our body – muscle chains, fascia chains, organs, nerves, blood circulation right down to the cellular level. With an estimated 100 billion cells in the body, we hope we are sending out positive signals!
Fascia of the body contracts and expands. Fascia is saturated with nerve endings and therefore is considered a sensory organ.
Recent scientific experiments have also proven that fascia actively contracts under stress.
As fascia encases everything including nerves, it is understandable that as fascia contracts under stress it compresses the nerves and therefore can be the cause of pain within the body (according to Dr Werner Klingler fascia researcher and team member from leading German fascia researcher, Dr Robert Schleip).
Rapha can say from his own personal experience, that prior to practicing yin yoga he had ongoing issues with chronic pain mobility of his right hip and lower back; after practicing Yin Yoga for 3 mouths he noticed substantial improvement of hip mobility and no longer experienced any pain. There are countless other stories from our friends and colleagues who have had similar experiences. Hence our passion for Yin Yoga is very personal.
One can only attempt to describe in words the profound, complex and transcending effect of Yin Yoga on the physical, mental and energetic body. So enough reading! We look forward to seeing you on your mat to experience it!
Yin Yoga – the quiet practice.

The main goal of Tao yin is not the pose, nor is it becoming flexible or standing on your hands is not the goal.

The goal is to create space where you were once stuck. To reveal the layers of protection you’ve built around your heart. To create flexibility of the mind and appreciate your body and become aware, therefore creating harmony between internal and external environments, which relaxes, replenishes and rejuvenates the body, developing in its practitioners a vital and healthy spirit.

A typical Tao Yin exercise will involve movement of the arms and body in time with controlled inhalation and exhalation. Each exercise is designed with a different goal in mind, for example calmative effects or expanded lung capacity.

Some of the exercises act as a means of sedating, some as a stimulant or a tonification, whilst others help in the activation, harnessing and cultivation of internal Ch’i energy and the external Li life force. Through the excellent health that is gained thereby, they all assist in the opening up of the whole body, enhance the functioning of the autonomic nervous system, increase the mental capacity of the brain, give greater mind control, increase perception and intuition, uplift moral standards, and give tranquillity to the mind, which in turn confers inner harmony and greater happiness. As time goes by, these exercises slowly open up the functional and control channels that feed and activate the energy, nervous and psychic centers, enabling the individual to have a deeper understanding, consciousness and awareness of the spiritual world.
