With wild seas predicted this weekend, the value of healthy vegetated dunes is worth considering.

Healthy coastal vegetation quietly captures and stores sand, buffers storms and protects our beaches through natural processes refined over thousands of years.

Yet too often these systems are removed for short-term ocean views, only for coastal councils to later spend enormous amounts of money pumping sand back onto eroding beaches — trying to recreate the protection nature once provided for free.

Healthy natural systems are some of the most valuable infrastructure a coastal community can invest in.

It seems illogical that coastal resilience and dune protection are still not more deeply embedded within our coastal culture.
