The average person comes home from a holiday with a fridge magnet.

I came home with 73 photos of curry puffs and a new weekend project.

Findings: the flaky spiral pastry was worth the effort.

Recipe is linked in bio.

Chicken and ginger congee 🥢🍚🇲🇾

One of my favourite comfort foods. Tender shredded chicken, fragrant ginger and jasmine rice simmered low and slow until silky and creamy.

Ingredients

* 850g bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
* 250g jasmine rice, rinsed
* 500ml chicken stock
* 1.5L water
* 1 tbsp Vegeta Chicken Stock & Seasoning
* 8cm piece ginger, sliced and lightly crushed
* ½ tsp ground white pepper
* ½ tsp sea salt

To serve

* Spring onions
* Coriander
* Light soy sauce
* Sesame oil
* White pepper
* Crispy fried shallots (optional)
* Chinese doughnuts (youtiao)

The full recipe is now on Substack. Link in bio.

Serve it with Chinese doughnuts for dipping and you’ve got one of life’s great comfort meals.

You can take the girl out of Malaysia, but you can’t take Malaysia out of the girl 🇲🇾

Had a craving for kuih lapis, seri muka, ang ku kuih and curry puffs, so I picked these up from BigTea only to find out they’re sadly closing at the end of May 🥲

Also couldn’t leave Singapore without this plate from East Inspirations tucked into my hand luggage.

If anyone knows where to find good homemade kuih around Melbourne, please let me know!

Capitol Cafe in Kuala Lumpur has been around since 1957, and after eating here twice in two days I fully understand why.

Kaya toast layered with cold butter, soft eggs with soy and white pepper, crispy fried chicken nasi lemak with sambal, and kopi o strong enough to make your eye twitch.

The kind of old school kopitiam breakfast that makes you immediately start planning your next visit before you’ve even paid the bill. 🇲🇾

You know a sauce is good when they give you fried mantou just so none of it goes to waste.

Sambal lala, BBQ stingray, lime and plum juice, then cendol to finish.

One very good night at Newton Hawker Centre (Newton Circus).

If you could only order one hawker dish, what would it be?
