Compliments can tell us more than we realise. They often point to the strengths that others consistently experience in us, whether thatโs reliability, positivity, creativity, or the ability to bring out the best in others.
Recognising those strengths can help build self-awareness and confidence. At the same time, even our greatest strengths can become blind spots when overused, making it just as important to know when to lean in and when to step back.

Last week, I was working with a leader using the Emotional Culture Deck.
As leaders, we spend a lot of time talking about strategy, performance, priorities, and outcomes. Yet beneath all of that sits something far more powerful โ emotion.
When invited to select the emotions they didn't want to feel, words such as guarded, intimidated, disconnected, and alone appeared. Yet when asked how they wanted to feel, the cards shifted to connected, open-minded, brave, confident, and encouraged.
The gap between those two states created a powerful conversation.
Self-awareness begins with recognising what we are feeling. Emotional regulation begins when we acknowledge those emotions without judgement and consciously choose how we want to respond rather than react.
The reality is that leaders set the emotional tone for their teams. When we understand our own emotional state, we are better equipped to create environments where others can feel safe, connected, and able to perform at their best.
Sometimes the most important leadership conversation isn't about what we're doing.
It's about how we're feeling.

They are the ones who intentionally create space for different perspectives, experiences, and ideas to be heard.
That requires humility.
It requires self-awareness.
And sometimes, it means staying open to conversations that challenge your assumptions.
Because diversity of thought can feel uncomfortable before it becomes valuable.
Yet when leaders embrace differences with curiosity instead of resistance, teams become more innovative, more adaptable, and more connected. Trust grows. Collaboration improves. People feel safer contributing their best ideas.

A challenging but feasible goal sits in that sweet spot. It stretches growth, requires effort, and feels worthwhile, while still being within reach. It might be related to health, relationships, career, wellbeing, or simply creating more balance in life.

One of the unexpected highlights of travelling recently was the opportunity to meet one of my clients face to face in Birmingham. Great to have our final session in person ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ณ๐๐๐ฌ๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ๐๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐จ๐ฑ.
When you work with a diverse portfolio of clients, in-person meetings arenโt always possible, which makes moments like these feel even more worthwhile โ and a reminder that investing the time to connect matters.
A very warm welcome from the team at Hitachi Energy (special mention to the front-of-house staff who were amazing ๐), plus quite the view over Centenary Square.
Birmingham also holds a special place for me โ itโs where I had my first corporate role, so every visit brings back good memories!
