Classic Stitches is honoured to have local and visiting patchwork and quilting experts give classes and advice to our customers. We are also very proud of our Sewing Machine/Embroidery Machine expert Kerry Marwick who is running three classes from our lovely air conditioned shop.

On Wednesdays anyone with a Embroidery Machine is welcome to spend the day working on a project devised by Kerry. Daily cost for facilities, tea and coffee is $15 and extra for the prepared kit which will include fabric, stabilizer and pattern. This week the girls will be making a multitude of leaves to to create a fabulous 3D tree.

On Thursdays, those with regular sewing machines will be guided through expert tips and techniques that will make anyone fall in love with their machine. This week we will be making fabric storage boxes.

And, on the first Monday of each month is Kerry's Christmas Club. An easy and beautiful way to prepare for the most wonderful holiday of the year.

So to paraphrase the great Dani Rojas from the feelgood Ted Lasso, we all agree the 'SEWING IS LIFE' and that Kerry has as much energy and enthusiasm as any Brazillian footballer.

Please visit our store to look at examples of her work and to book a spot on the large table. Or call us on 9582 7567.

One of our classes at Classic Stitches is this Sampler Quilt which teaches the basic techniques of patchwork over 8 weeks. Each Tuesday evening 5:30-8, our students will focus on one or two blocks using fabrics from our store here at 1/18 Galbraith Loop, Erskine. Bookings for our next 8 week series can be made by visiting our store Wednesday to Saturday or by calling 9582 7567. For this quilt top our teacher Judith @lubilouquilter used Madison One fabrics by William Reue @freespiritfabrics @_classic_stitches

On the weekend Classic Stitches hosted a Hexagon Workshop with Jennifer Wellington. In our air conditioned studio and with all the participants wearing masks, we were shown expert techniques to create Jennifer's Quilt. We hope to repeat this class in the year as there was lot of interest but we were mindful of having a smaller group during this time.

Here at our store we are working hard to stock beautiful imported quilting cottons and this workshop was a perfect opportunity to commit to using the full range of French General by Moda Fabrics - 22 patterns in all. A beautiful choice for 4 of our students who received the 20% discount when they purchased fabric for the class. Other fabric used was the delightful Its Raining Cats and Dogs by Benartex and some vintage florals. A hexagon quilt is also a lovely design for those who like to use heirloom fabrics and our students will confidently tackle those treasured pieces.

Nothing beats visiting a Quilt Store and we chose one of the best for baby Etta’s first big trip in a car. Isabel drove us through a snowy landscape 40 minutes away from her home in Moline, Illinois to Muscatine, Iowa ‘Pearl of the Mississippi’ Here is where The Little Red Hen Quilt Store is found.
A beautiful re-purposed barn and silo that measures 4200 square feet and is crammed with handmade quilts, historical tapestries, quilting cotton ranges, original patterns and many more.
A delight to visit and I hope to stock their authentic and original patterns in our own Classic Stitches which prides itself on being a regional country quilt store in Western Australia. And, which is a pretty nice place to visit as well.

Being a Quilt Shop owner on holiday in Illinois means I get to sleep under a hand made denim quilt by @rosebay_quilting A cosy sleep means everything I see relates back to the colour blue - found in the nicest traditional patchwork designs. From looking out the window at the snow and the birds, to visiting the wonderful @figgeartmuseum then catching the first episode of Bewitched on Roku and finally, to receiving a vintage piecework found by my daughter at her local antique store.

Would love you to visit the store here at 1/18 Galbraith Loop, Erskine to see the completed quilts for our forthcoming workshops.

Judith Lubieniecki will be running a quilt Sampler course which will run each Tuesday evening 6pm - 8:30 and will concentrate on a different block each week. She has combined the blocks into a beautiful quilt which needs to be seen up close. Quite stunning! This class will begin on Feb 1st.

Also on display is Judith's Bloc Party quilt which is the design for our Feb 6th Sunday Workshop. This design utilises our wonderful Cotton Shot range (new colours arriving next week)

Also on display is Jennifer Wellington's Hexagon Quilt and her class will be held on Saturday 19th February.

Other exciting classes on offer will be a Christmas Club and a Machine Embroidery Day to be held once a month.

All our classes will only be using our fabrics and each student will receive a 20% discount off their fabric choice. Choosing fabrics can be a daunting task but visitors to Classic Stitches can be sure of receiving expert and interesting advice.

During this very hot period in Western Australia (42 C / 107.6 F recorded 19/01/22) our shop had to close its doors. Luckily on that very day the amazing team from came in to install Air Conditioning units. This coupled with some very nice sun blockout roller blinds from and new overhead LED lighting will make Classic Stitches an even more comfortable and enjoyable place to shop, take classes and meet up with friends.

In February we will have classes on Tuesday evening and can eventually accommodate those who would prefer to create in our space in the cooler hours. During this time we have also changed our opening hours to Wednesday to Saturday 10am -2 pm.

Very proud to introduce my beautiful new granddaughter Etta Scout, born in 2022 ✨

In these times, quilts for newborns are used more as floor/bed mats or cuddle cloths. Parents are advised to swaddle or dress their baby in a romper and a sleeping sack when it’s time to sleep in their bassinet on their own.

After a year of development, regular bedding can be used and those quilts that us Mum’s & Grandma’s have lovingly made can become a special part of their lives.

Etta is pretty happy laying on quilts made by her mum & grandma and they make a nice backdrop for Dad’s photos ✨

As well as our regular monthly workshop with Judith Lubieniecki (6th February)and Hexagon Workshop with Jennifer Wellington (19th February) we are also establishing the following events -

*Quilt Sampler Class with Judith Tuesday Starting Feb 1st 6 - 8:30pm and each Tuesday evening after for 8 weeks.
*Christmas Club which will run on the 2nd Monday of each month
*Machine Embroidery Day for those wishing to get the best out of their machine on the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

We will post more information about the workshops, classes and events in future posts.

Ps, I am having the most lovely time with my daughter, son-in-law and beautiful new grandaughter in the snow covered city of Moline, Illinois. Back in February, Julia x

Meet the Maker!

For the next few days before we close for the Christmas break
on the 23rd of December you can meet our very own Patchwork and Quilting expert in-store here at Classic Stitches. Judith Lubieniecki is usually found at her own studio where she is in high demand finishing off client's quilts with her long arm quilting.

Here at the store have a collection of her amazing works on display and for sale. It is worth coming in to see Geode and Winter Path which are hanging in the workshop area of our store. Judith used a combination of tonal and Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics to create these works that look fantastic on the wall and would create a unique bedroom statement.

Its also a good time to visit and stock up on fabric and notions for your holiday projects.

It has been the busiest (and prettiest)time of the year here at Classic Stitches We have had visits from local Patchwork groups and girls on sewing retreats. And three classes in 1 week! Three days after the Xmas Pumpkin class we had a replay of the Jelly Roll challenge and then 1 day later a smaller group came in and made a complete Quillo top with Judith Lubieniecki Can't show all the works as there are some being made for Christmas present surprises ✨

Everyone has been delightful and I am very proud of all their results. Especially the girls in our community who kindly bring in their completed quilts to show and share their knowledge.

What a wonderful time our class had on Wednesday with the very talented and kind Kerry Marwick. She ran a workshop on creating a Christmas Pumpkin sharing her techniques for machine work, beading and creating embellishments to make each creation shine. Each participant received a wonderful pack filled with beads, fabric and ideas and it was a delight to watch each person's progress.

Kerry originally created this design for Halloween but we have all decided that the Pumpkin is the perfect decorating base for all seasons and events. We hope to post the student's finished pieces over the next week.

Christmas is fast approaching and creating something personal and unique is a wonderful thing to share with your family. Kerry has used her amazing skills to add sparkle to our shop with her take on our advent calendar (which sold out very quickly) and has unique bags and pumpkins on display and for sale at our store. We also will planning a Kerry Christmas Club for the new year. Keep an eye out for details in the forthcoming weeks.

Here at the store we have a large variety of quilt ladders made by a local retired farmer. These ladders are fabulous for displaying our quilts outside and in the store. John is also happy to take orders for different sizes to suit your space. Perfect for interiors as it evokes Hamptons/Greek Island style if limewashed or a fabulous library/bookshop look if stained a darker colour. Classic Stitches encourages our local artisans to supply pieces for our shop here in Galbraith Loop. In the pictures we have Monstera leaves by @kerrymarwick, Fairywren patterns by @mariemitchelldesignercrafts beautiful geometric quilt by @lubilouquilter and textiles by @kaffefassettstudio (ok he’s not a local but us textile buffs here wish that he was!) @_classic_stitches

We had a delightful day at our workshop space with Marie creating these lovely little birds from felt and thread. Marie has produced a well thought out design (one of ten) and it was a treat to sit with ten lovely ladies and make something so pretty.

The paper patterns are available from Classic Stitches at $15 and the Kits containing all you need to make this Splendid Fairywren are available for $27.50
