Thank you to Dementia Australia for putting its training technology on show at Parliament House this week, providing an insight into its program set to be rolled out in Tasmania’s health sector. An estimated 11,200 people are living with dementia in Tasmania, and this number is on the rise, so education and training in this space is vital.

It was my honour to speak about OzHarvest Tasmania in Parliament last week. In July OzHarvest Tasmania passed an amazing milestone: over one million meals rescued and redistributed to Tasmanians doing it tough. One million. As of August 12, OzHarvest Tasmania had rescued 539,073 kilograms of good food from 57 donors, delivering it free of charge to 53 charities across the state, all with the help of 71 amazing volunteers working across Launceston and Hobart giving more than 1900 hours of time. This partnership is reducing food waste, creating meaningful support networks and strengthening communities. So, I’d like to thank Jenn Heggarty and her OzHarvest Tasmania team for the incredible work they do.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania is urging the public to remain calm and vigilant. If you do come across dead or sick birds or other wildlife, please follow the advice to avoid contact, record the incident, and report it by calling the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

The countdown is on for the 2026 Australian Transplant Games – the nation’s most inspirational sporting event, celebrating the life-changing impact of organ and tissue donation. The Games will be held in Launceston from September 26 to October 3. I was honoured to meet athletes, donor families and health professionals at a function held at Parliament House on Tuesday. The Games will feature 20 sports and involve 500 competitors with 100 Tasmanians set to take part. Let’s cheer them on.

A reminder that Homeless Action Now 2026 is being held tomorrow, Friday, August 7, 11am to 2pm, in Launceston's Civic Square. The event has been organised in partnership with a range of local organisations to raise awareness of homelessness and housing insecurity in Northern Tasmania, with a particular focus this year on hidden homelessness. There will be information stalls from local service providers,
a "Swap a Snack for a Snag" community barbecue and Light Up Launceston, where the community will gather at midday to shine their phone torches in support of those experiencing homelessness.

“Everyone deserves a safe, secure and affordable place to live” and "Housing ends homelessness." These were the messages at the heart of today’s Homelessness Week Walk to Raise Awareness. Thank you to Vinnies, the Salvos, City Mission and ShelterTas for organising the walk and for the incredible work they do every day to support Tasmanians experiencing homelessness and hardship.

Today I had the privilege of giving a talk on “Living Well in Later Life” at a meeting of the St John’s Church senior fellowship. It was a wonderful opportunity to share ideas about staying active, maintaining good health, nurturing meaningful relationships and embracing the opportunities that come with every stage of life. Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their experiences and contributed to such an engaging discussion. Here's to living well, staying connected, and making the most of every day.
