Super pleased for ECGA Tour Team Players Leon, and Taichi this week.

Leon had his best finish as a pro finishing 3rd in China with 63-66-73-66 (-20). Earlier this year we started a difficult but necessary swing change. Leon has been been making progress with his shots and ball flight although as sometimes happen results have not been difficult during this period of change and he has missed all his cuts until this week, but this is just reward for his determination and efforts. I’m sure this will be the foundation of further and ongoing success.

A month ago that I discussed with Taichi the importance of trusting yourself and trusting your instincts. Understanding yourself and understanding your DNA of your own move.. After an injury in 2024 Taichi had taken on board lots of external advice.

It goes back to one of my core beliefs about Tour coaching - there’s a lot of ‘outside -in’ coaching on tour but for the most part Tour players are already high level geniuses at the game and that’s why they are there! What’s needed is a note ‘inside-out’ coaching approach which further empowers the genius of the player to achieve even more.

It’s also important to have a mental catharsis from time to time to cleanse your motivation - that you always play for yourself and not to please others.

For both Tour Golf is an ongoing journey and ongoing education and with each challenge comes learning and the opportunity to move up and progress further. Both should be very proud of themselves.

When o was a junior in the 1980s, the Pro was the main person at the club. Everything revolved around the pro shop, add the pro would meet and greet members, run the competitions, coach, fix clubs and sell merchandise. .

For me, at Kingstown GC near Bath, that was Richard Emery. Richard was a fine player and playing the Open 11 times, won a European Tour event and went on to play on the PGA Cup Team.

I first attended his summer coaching session during the school holidays in 1979. The cost was 50p!

Richard always encouraged me and when I was older we would often play 9 holes and if I beat him the reward was a box of Titleist balls. However I never beat him once!

In the 1990s, I then went on to work for him an assistant pro. He always encouraged me to play and practice as much as I could, and encouraged me to attend Tour School in 1990.

I’ll be forever grateful to him, and the many other PGA Pro’s that have helped and guided me on my own golfing journey to date 🙏

Expert coaching is not just about teaching Tour or elite players. Here is GC Sion and Swiss PGA Certified Junior Development Specialist Coach Greg Chavaz welcoming my daughter Miko into his Saturday class.

Miko was very apprehensive going for the first time in a French speaking golf class but Greg made her feel welcome, built rapport, and Miko is super keen to go again.

Super pleased for ECGA Tour Team Player Matthew Cheung achieving a personal best result of tied 2nd place in the Taiwan Glass Taifong Open on with -13. Congratulations to winner Ian Snyman from South Africa.

Matt had missed his previous cuts in the Asian Tour this year, but in every difficulty there is a seed of greater opportunity and Matt made some minor adjustments after Singapore. The key takeaway point is that every tournament is a ‘learning class’, and the greatest teacher is your experiences. Learning from your own experience is not easy, but the golden nuggets are always there. As we say at our Academy, ‘There’s no failure just feedback’

What is the best your best GAME FACE tournament day?

I remember a DP World Tour player a few years back recounting to me that he had been in the final group of a tournament over 20 times in his career, but only had won once.

He said he was a little perplexed as to why he had not won more times because for the most part, he had the perfect mentality in the final round of being totally calm and relaxed, just focused on the process.

The concept I use in my coaching is there are different GAME FACES for different players and it’s not one style fits all.

From a conceptual understanding perspective, I talk to players about fFIVE different styles of GAME FACES.

ECGA Tour Team Player James is playing his national open and naturally there has been some media attention and this can sometimes create expectation which impacts the players mentality and GAME FACE.

James shot 75 day one and struggled to deliver his preferred game face which we call ‘HUNTER’.

He recognized this and adjusted day 2 which helped to produce one of the best of the day scores of 66 to make the cut.

Understanding that different players need different GAME FACES is the critical point. Nick Faldo was very different to Sandy Lyle who was very different than Tiger Woods.

What is that you best GAME FACE or mentality that helps you best performing your best tournament day?
