Winter Leather Care Tip: Avoid heat.

During winter, there’s nothing better than a good fireplace to warm the living room! Unfortunately, leather and heat don’t go well together, so be careful how close you have your furniture to the fire.

A good way to tell if the furniture is too close is to touch the surface of the leather with your hand. If you can comfortably leave your hand there without feeling like it’s burning, then your leather will be ok.

Basically the special topcoat sealers on your lounge’s surface will simply deteriorate and breakdown, allowing the leather to be exposed to harmful body sweats, acids and oils. It can also trap disease and germs, including dangerous mould and severely reduce the life expectancy of your leather lounge.

PREPARING LEATHER FOR WINTER

We all like a warm, comfy sofa during those cold winter months. Many people believe that leather can
be cold in winter and the only type of furniture to have that cozy feeling is fabric. This is not the case.
The following tips will help you prepare your leather furniture for the winter months so you and your
family can enjoy it’s comfort.
1. Clean. A good rule of thumb with leather furniture is to have it cleaned each change of season.
There’s no better time to rejuvenate your leather lounge that at the end of Autumn. You can do
this yourself using a professional leather cleaning product and conditioning cream, however it may
pay to get some expert advice first to ensure you’re using the correct products. If your furniture is
large, you may prefer to have a professional leather technician do the job for you. Cleaning is
done by hand and a professional can also give you advice on maintaining the quality of your
leather and can repair minor scratches or stains while on the job.
2. Condition. It is important to treat your leather furniture with a good quality conditioning cream.
Again, get the right advice on which product is best for your leather type. Not all leathers are the
same and yours may need a specific type of cream or balm to ensure it maintains its softness.
Think of leather like your own skin. It can dry out and needs the oils returned to it. This helps to
maintain that soft feel and allow you to enjoy a warm sofa through winter.
3. Avoid heat. During winter, there’s nothing better than a good fireplace or heater to warm the living
room. Leather and heat don’t go well together, so be careful how close you have your furniture to
a heat source. Too much heat for a prolonged period of time will cause leather to shrink and dry
out. A good way to tell if the furniture is too close is to touch the surface of the leather with your
hand. If you can comfortably leave your hand there without feeling like it’s burning, then your
leather will be ok.
4. Blankets. A warm, plush blanket on your sofa certainly adds to the comfort factor, however some
fabrics are not colour fast and can leave stains on your leather. There’s usually no problem in
wrapping yourself up in a blanket while you’re relaxing on the lounge, however try to avoid leaving
the blanket on the surface as a permanent feature. Prolonged contact with the leather can leave a
stain that will require a professional to remove.
5. Leather’s are all created equal. Not all leather is the same. Your local leather Doctor can provide
you with expert advice on the type of leather you have and what to expect with how it feels and
how to properly care for it. Some leathers are designed for high traffic and therefore have a firmer
feel. Others are designed to be supple and soft. These are often called aniline, suede or wax pullup
leathers. The basic rule when it comes to feel is, the softer the leather, the more delicate it is.
Consult your furniture store when choosing a leather lounge to ensure you get the right one for
your lifestyle.
