π Australiaβs 2026-27 Migration Program! π¦πΊβ¨
The Australian Government has announced the official planning levels for the upcoming financial year, locking in 185,000 total places. At NIC Migration, we simplify the complex world of migration law so you can focus on your future. Whether you are applying from offshore or looking to transition your status, the substantial allocations in key streams mean major windows of opportunity are wide open.
Key Highlights from the 2026-27 Planning Levels:
β’ Employer-Sponsored Boost: A whopping 58,040 places are allocated to help employers fill crucial skills gaps across Australia.
β’ State & Territory Nominated: 35,500 places are available for jurisdictions to address local economic and regional workforce needs.
β’ Skilled Independent Growth: Set at 21,090 places to reward highly qualified professionals with strong employment tracks.
β’ Family Reunification: The Family Stream stands strong at 52,460 places, with Partner and Child visas remaining demand-driven to keep immediate families together.

π¦πΊ PROPOSED GSM POINTS TEST CHANGES β WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The Australian Government has indicated a future reform of the General Skilled Migration (GSM) Points Test. The goal is to prioritise highly skilled, highly educated, and younger migrants to drive long-term productivity.
No official changes have been implemented yet. The current points system remains fully active, and the 2026β27 Migration Program has maintained 185,000 permanent places, with a strong focus (over 70%) on the Skill stream.
For applicants with 65+ points, this remains a positive window to act. We recommend focusing on:
β State nomination & Regional pathways
β Strategic profile enhancements (English, Partner points, etc.)
At NIC Migration, we are already analysing these proposed directions. We continue to help our clients navigate the current framework while preparing strategic "Plan B" options should the reforms be enacted.
π If you have an EOI lodged β Stay positive. Many reforms include transitional arrangements for those already in the queue.
π If you are planning to lodge soon β Timeliness is key. Acting under the current known rules is often safer than waiting for the unknown.
Your Australian migration journey is still very much alive. π¦πΊ

π¦πΊπ¦πΊπ¦πΊ AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL BUDGET UPDATE: 2026β27 Migration Program Planning Levels π¦πΊπ¦πΊπ¦πΊ
π¦πΊ GOOD NEWS FOR SKILLED MIGRANTS β Australia Maintains 185,000 Migration Places for FY 2026β27 π¦πΊ
The Australian Government has officially stated in the Budget Paper that the permanent Migration Program will remain at 185,000 places for 2026β27 β a strong sign that skilled migration remains a national priority.
π Positive outlook for offshore applicants:
While the Government is prioritising some onshore transitions, more than 55,000 places will still be allocated to offshore migrants, particularly highly skilled professionals needed to support Australiaβs long-term economic growth and workforce shortages.
πΉ Program structure remains stable:
β
Around 70% Skilled Migration
β
Around 30% Family Stream
πΉ Key takeaway for offshore applicants:
Australia continues to actively welcome qualified skilled migrants from overseas in sectors facing ongoing demand.
π Net Overseas Migration (NOM) is projected to gradually decrease over the coming years, reflecting a more planned and sustainable migration system β creating stronger long-term opportunities for genuine skilled applicants.
π‘ For offshore candidates with strong qualifications, work experience, English proficiency, and skills in demand, this remains an excellent time to prepare for:
β’ Skilled Migration pathways
β’ State Nomination opportunities
β’ Employer-sponsored visas
β’ Regional migration options
Australiaβs long-term focus on skilled talent remains clear. π¦πΊ

π Still on a Student Visa? Your Path to PR Might Be Closer Than You Think! π¦πΊ
We get this question every day: "Can I apply for a Subclass 491 visa while Iβm still on a Student Visa (Subclass 500)?"
The answer is YES! β
You donβt have to wait until your studies are completely over to start planning. If you are onshore in Australia, you can lodge a 491 application as long as youβve secured a State Nomination or family sponsorship and meet the points test under the General Skilled Migration program.
π Why the 491 is a Game Changer for Students:
β
Extra Points: Get an immediate 15-point boost from State Nomination.
β
Bridging Rights: Apply onshore and receive a Bridging Visa to stay in Australia while your application is processed.
β
Path to Permanent Residency: The 491 is a 5-year visa that leads directly to the Subclass 191 (Permanent Residency) after living and working in a regional area for 3 years.
π The "Decision Ready" Difference
At NIC Migration, we just celebrated a massive win for our clientβa Student Visa holder who just received his WA State Nomination for Cardiac Technician! π₯
Because we submitted a "Decision Ready" file, there were:
β No requests for further information.
β No stressful delays.
β
Just a seamless approval.
π Are You Next?
The 2026 migration landscape is shifting, and "visa hopping" rules are stricter than ever. Donβt risk your future with a DIY application. Let us map out your journey from the classroom to Australian residency.
