She survived decades of abuse, but no one asked the right questions!

This is the theme that came up at MARVOW 2.0 conference in February, where experts from across Europe highlighted the fact that violence against older women remains largely invisible, with many women suffering decades of abuse.

MARVOW 2.0 is changing that by bringing together social services, healthcare, police, women's support services, and perpetrator programmes to respond with the age-sensitive, victim-centred approach older women deserve.

As we approach the end of the project, we must remember that our work is not over.

At the MARVOW 2.0 Conference in Brussels, policymakers and experts came together to confront violence against older women - an issue still hidden at the intersection of ageism and sexism.

The conference made one thing clear: violence against older women is real, widespread, and still overlooked. A lifetime of suffering can be shortened by small, timely interventions. A doctor’s words. A phone number. A door that opens. Small changes can save years of pain.

We call on EU institutions and organisations to act - by raising awareness, funding specialised services, embedding age-sensitive approaches in policy, and ensuring older women’s voices shape the solutions.

Older women experience violence that is often rooted in both sexism and ageism, yet they rarely receive specialised support. To help frontline professionals better assess and manage these cases, MARVOW 2.0 has developed a Risk Factor Checklist.

Older women are particularly vulnerable to violence, sometimes even from their own children. Many, like 73-year-old Maria from Bulgaria, suffer in silence, out of love, loyalty, or fear.

Thanks to support from MARVOW 2.0 partner Асоциация НАЯ, Maria was able to find safety, access legal protection, secure housing, and ensure her grandchildren could go to school - giving them a chance to start a new, safer chapter of life.
