Lecture Spotlight: Dr. Iason Eleftherios Tzouriadis
The Duel of the Century – Ascanio della Corgna’s Urban Duels
In this lecture, Dr. Iason Eleftherios Tzouriadis explores the high-stakes urban duels of Ascanio della Corgna, a figure whose martial exploits gripped the imagination of 16th-century Italy. Drawing from legal records, fight books, letters, poems and artwork, the lecture paints a vivid picture of Ascanio’s personal duelling history and martial context.
Participants will gain insight into the weapons, locations and societal implications of early modern Italian duelling, framed through two dramatic, near-cinematic episodes.

Lecture Spotlight: Dr. Iason Eleftherios Tzouriadis
A Mediterranean Basket-Hilt Sword – The Origin, Military Use and Cultural Role of the Schiavona
Elegant, distinctive and often misunderstood, the schiavona is one of the most striking basket-hilted swords of early modern Europe. In this lecture, Dr. Iason Eleftherios Tzouriadis will trace the development of this sword type using material from art, museum collections, armourial registers and period accounts.
From its origins and technical evolution to its role in the hands of Venetian troops and Balkan mercenaries, the schiavona reveals a rich blend of military function and cultural identity. A lecture for those interested in both the blade and the stories behind it.
