What is flute in packaging?

Flute refers to the material contained between liner boards of the carton box. The construction of the flute helps to make the carton more durable & able to withstand more pressure. It affects how easily the box dents & the height the boxes can be stacked for shipping.

Corrugated Board Style

Flute is categorized by thickness of paper being folded (fluting paper). This can range from single walled flutes, which are smaller flutes but provide better printability & foldability. Larger flutes, which are typically double walled flutes & above, provide greater strength & cushioning, making them ideal for shipping.

Types of Flute in Corrugated Packaging

A-flute: Great compression & cushioning as well as fine stacking strength. These corrugated boxes contain 36 flutes per linear foot of ¼”.These types of flute boxes are good for fragile/ delicate items.

B-flute: Good in resisting puncture & flat crush, good stacking strength, crushing resistance & also a top option for printing. These corrugated boxes contain 46 flutes per linear foot of ⅛”. Mainly used in inner packaging & displays.

C-flute: Most commonly used corrugated box flute, good cushioning/stacking/printing properties, used for shipping/ display packaging, good for glass /dairy, 41 flutes per linear foot of (3/16)”.

E-flute: Greater crush resistance, second most commonly used corrugated box, eco-friendly, relatively flat surface for high quality printing applications. The thin board profile of E-flute reduces outer box dimensions, & can help save storage space. Because of its thin profile, cushioning properties, & flat surface, E-flute offers a strong alternative for conventional paperboard folding cartons including boxes for cosmetics, fragile glass, ceramic items, & delicate instruments. These type of corrugated boxes contains 90 flutes per linear foot of (1/16)”

F-flute: small/ tighter, eco-friendly/ lower fiber content packaging, looks of high value, provides solid structure, used for custom printed boxes & retail packaging, good for cosmetic/ jewelry/ shoe boxes, 128 flutes per linear foot of (1/32)”
