Supportive Cancer Care Supportive Care Education and Promotion The Garden Route Supportive Care Institute was founded in March 2016 and was born from a passion for Oncology as well as for Supportive Care.
Supportive Care is a health care specialty focused on improving the quality of life for patients and their families by reducing the physical and emotional burdens of illness. Considering that the diagnosis of cancer is not just the identification of a physical disease, but often an event leading to serious emotional, social, and financial burdens for patients and their loved ones, Supportive Care is of special importance in Oncology. Expertise in the treatment of physical symptoms like pain, nausea, fatigue, etc., as well as in managing mental or emotional symptoms is paramount in the provision of effective supportive care. Supportive counselling is an equally important component of management. The Garden Route Supportive Care Institute strives to employ health care providers with a specialized knowledge of both cancer and supportive care to ensure the best possible service to their patients. A common misperception is that supportive care is offered only for patients who are ending curative treatment. Incorporating these services throughout all stages of treatment increases the likelihood of achieving an acceptable quality of life for patients and their loved ones. Whether patients are seeking a cure or focusing on improving the quality of the balance of their lives, the Garden Route Supportive Care Institute can be an invaluable source of support to patients and their families. Services provided include consultations and symptom management delivered by a trained oncologist with a special interest in Supportive Care. These consultations can be delivered on an out-patient base; in-patient consultations during hospitalization are also done. Should the patient become housebound, home visits can be arranged. As a person living with cancer often has a multitude of needs, various service providers are usually involved in their care. The Garden Route Supportive Care Institute recognizes the need for collaboration and will facilitate referral to relevant service organizations. Our aim is to coordinate care to deliver a truly seamless service when and where people need it. Promoting professional expertise in Supportive Care is another focus of the Institute. Education in all aspects of support is central in ensuring a service that is scientifically sound. It also serves to facilitate collaboration between different role players in Oncology and to establish integrated care delivery.
Mission: • To prevent, minimize and treat the effects that cancer and cancer treatments have on patients and their loved ones through the provision of Supportive Care • To provide education in Supportive Care • To promote access to Supportive Care
The Institute presented a lecture on Hope and the Cancer Experience at GVI Oncology last week. The slide shown here refers to the work done by Dr. Kaethae Weingarten.
Dr. Weingarten is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. She works with people who witnessed violence, but she is also a breast cancer survivor, having faced cancer 3 times, and has written extensively about these experiences.
Committed to education, the GRSCI participated in the Cansa Symposium that took place in George on 1st of September 2016.
We were glad to share in an afternoon dedicated to promoting knowledge on various aspects of cancer management.

What is Supportive Care all about?
The Garden Route Supportive Care Institute recognizes the complexities of caring for patients with cancer and the variability in their needs.
For those living with incurable disease, effective palliative care (aimed at improving quality of life for those with advanced disease) is essential. We shall collaborate with, among others, MOUNT HOPE HOSPICE, a non-profit NGO providing home-based hospice care to patients in George.
Our aim remains coordination of services to deliver truly seamless care when and where people need it.
