[07/04/20]   Good morning from clear Cape Town. We are still waiting for CR and NDZ to lift the ban. Ignore the smoke screens. Keep safe. Casa up and running

[06/27/20]   Good morning from a cold and stormy Cape Town. While the weather rages and wreaks havoc, I'm raging too at the injustice of our corrupt government, a government that is wreaking extreme and irreparable damage to our country and its citizens. Businesses are closing, people have no money to feed their families but, the informal (DZ doesn't use the word illicit or illegal, heaven forbid) traders are making a living!!!!!!! At whose expense???? The mind boggles. Watch this space.

[06/16/20]   Good morning. Public holiday but I am open at Casa Tabacs, upper level, Garden Shopping Centre, Mill Street from 9 till 2

[06/15/20]   Thank you Jacaranda FM, Riaan and Dewald, for an awesome interview. Kobus, you are a star customer and a laugh a minute

[06/15/20]   Good morning from chilly Cape Town. I will be interviewed this evening at 5.40, Jacaranda FM and look forward to answering questions to clear up any and all misunderstandings re the shop being vacated in Green market Square. Keep safe. Keep warm

[06/08/20]   A kindly gentleman contacted me re go fund me, for which I thanked him, but declined his kind and generous offer. However, he spoke of setting up a page and/or online platform. Please contact me. I am unable to find your details. I need to ask a technical question. Thank you. Diane 0828877842

State requests more time to defend cigarette ban in court The government is feeling the pressure of having to defend two separate cases relating to its ban on the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products.

Tobacco giant argues cigarette ban harms 'emotional wellbeing' of smokers

Very true British American Tobacco intends to argue that tobacco and vaping products are 'similar to coffee in the ways they are experienced and used by consumers'.

Sturks Tobacco Shop shuts Greenmarket Square doors after 226 years

We discuss Sturks Tobacconists’s with CapeTalk The cigarette ban has killed the oldest store in South Africa. Lester Kiewit interviews Sturks Tobacco Shop owner Diane Chakim.

After 226 years, Sturk's Tobacconists closes its doors

“This is not just about the smoker and/or the shop owner – this is about an industry that employs thousands of people.” Sturk's Tobacconists in Greenmarket Square is the latest Cape business to close its doors due to the negative effects of lockdown regulations.

[06/03/20]   Morning all. Quite overwhelming and very heartwarming to receive so much support and generous offers of assistance. We appreciate each and every one of you, our loyal and faithful customers. The minute we are allowed to trade, we will be ready to fill your orders. Please let us know exactly what you need, specific items and quantity and we will get them ready ASAP. Please note that we have no stock whatsoever of the Sturks brand of rolling tobaccos but they are on order. Sturks pipe blends are available but other items are also almost all gone. Our supply should arrive within a day or two of the lifting of the ban. Please be patient and allow us to rise again and service you, our customers, from a different platform. Keep watching this space.

[05/31/20]   Please guys I need all your details because we will be up and running soon. Private message me your full names and emails.
Here’s hoping DZ gets off her soap box

Hi guys, me again. Our sister store in the Gardens Centre is selling this wonderful locally made sanitizer. I use it at home and while it has 70% alcohol, which does the trick, it has a wonderful and refreshing fragrance. I highly recommend this product and it will be available mid next week.

This story about the small shops and their overpriced cigarettes is a very touchy subject. Why touchy? Because if I really go into the nitty gritty, I may be arrested for slander, amongst other things. Sturks Tobacconists and Casa Tabacs has never and will never take advantage of a situation such as the one we are now experiencing. We sell our product at regular prices at all times. I have been offered exorbitant prices for my goods but, firstly, it’s illegal and, secondly, I do not have cigarettes. The government of our country has caused this illegal, corrupt and exploitative situation. Poor people are being robbed while small businesses like mine, are losing income and, in many cases, their livelihoods. Think carefully and do due diligence before deciding to whom to point a finger. Please do not let innocent, poor business owners suffer because of the greed of some unscrupulous people. Sturks Tobacconists and Casa Tabacs will be back.

[05/25/20]   Well, what can I say? Drink to your hearts content but don’t smoke! The illicit trade is thriving, poor people are paying exorbitant prices for sub standard cigarettes and tobacco and our powers that be are reaping the rewards. Not our country, heaven forbid, benefiting from the legal revenues from the legal sales of tobacco etc, but our corrupt politicians. Please do not despair, I will find a way to get through this disaster and come back fighting. You can always reach me here and I will do my utmost to respond ASAP and keep you, our loyal customers, updated. I know it is hard to be without your smokes etc but, please, do not support the illegal trade. Many livelihoods are being compromised, many people are losing their jobs and/or their businesses but, more importantly, the crooks are getting richer, benefiting from their unscrupulous greed and we, the man on the street, are suffering. When will this change? How many people must have no food before things change? This is not just about the smoker and/or the shop owner - this is about an industry that employs thousands of people, from the tobacco farmer to the factories to the cigarette companies and, finally, after going, through many more channels, to the consumer. Shame on Dlamini-Zuma and her cronies. Shame on Cyril for kowtowing to these unscrupulous people. Keep watching this space. Down but not out

[05/23/20]   Saturday May 23 and still in limbo. I fear our government does not have our best interests at heart. Businesses are folding and people are hungry. Illicit trade is booming as clean and conscientious Cele wants receipts for cigarettes purchased. We are becoming the laughing stock of the world. Please watch this space. Down, but most definitely not out.

We will be back soon

Did you know that Sturk's Tobacconists in the Central City at 54 Shortmarket Street is 225 years old?

The shop is still going strong and celebrated this milestone in August this year. Congratulations Sturk's Tobacconists! Thank you for making the Central City your home.

[05/15/20]   Good morning all from a wet but beautiful Cape Town. Please be patient. Very trying times. As much as you guys are desperate for your tobaccos etc, we, at Sturks, are desperate to get back to our business of serving you, our loyal customers. If you wish, please send us your orders and we will prepare them within 48 hours of the lifting of the lock down. We will be able to order most items on the day of the lifting but, some suppliers may take up to 3 days to supply us. We do not have, at the moment, any cigarettes or rolling tobaccos left. Be patient. We will work as quickly as humanly possible to get back on track and have your orders ready for collection. Thank you and be safe. From us with gratitude The Sturks Team

[02/09/20]   Sunday February 16 we will be having a service in honor of my dad Abe. A tombstone will be erected and some memories will be shared. Pinelands Jewish Cemetery No 2 at 10 a.m.

[12/28/19]   I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued and much valued support
Best wishes for 2020
Regards from us all at Sturks and Casa Tabacs
