Students, remember how I explain that one of the most gratifying, heart-warming experiences is that of playing lullabies for one's childrens? And that one should never "practice" but always "play music?" You never know whose heart will be touched ... here is a wonderful example shared by a very kind neighbor.

5 Qualities of an Outstanding Piano Teacher

OK ... past and present students .. you get to comment!

alfred.com The majority of musicians have multiple teachers throughout their careers and can probably easily recall the ones who really stand out as most effective. What is it that sets them apart? What characteristics do those teachers share?

[06/02/20]   Flutist? Flautist? Neither are English-language originals; they are both Anglicized versions of flûtiste (French) and flautista (Italian). American English? I'm a flute player ... always safe, always accurate ... never "hoity-toity" (envision finger under nose lifting chin to symbolize feet don't have to touch the floor .. an old-fashioned gesture indicating that one feels superior).

My mother used to say that flautist is obsolete Italian .. unless you ARE Italian! As that term became fashionable in the mid 19th century. So .... Flute player, I am!

Mi Ha'ish

Kinneret Ely and Rami Bar-Niv and I played a benefit performance arranged by the Bursteins in support of a children's playground in Israel in September of 2016. The lovely piece was composed by Rami Bar-Niv. Ironically, this performance led to the discovery that a second bone in my left arm was still broken.

Rami Bar-Niv's Mi Ha'ish as performed by soprano Kinneret Ely, flutist Tonia Herrin, and the composer at the piano. Williamsburg, VA, USA. September 18, 2016.

Question: why do pianos have 88 keys?

March 28th is World Piano Day. Why, might you ask? Why, it is the 88th day of the year!
Here is some interesting historical context:

Medley for Postlude Oct 13 2019

Michael Fager sang a BEAUTIFUL version of On Eagle's Wings for the solo today ... which led me to include it in today's postlude, along with Be Thou My Vision. Three pieces which fit together easily.

A Mighty Fortress is Our God Martin Luther arr Jay Rouseered with great a=mag

I LOVE Jay Rouse's arrangements .. so lush .. Here is part of his thoughts about this arrangement: "This text is most often rendered with great magnitude and power...but it is truth that most assuredly deserves quiet reflection." Thus the second 2/3s of today's prelude. Again, quite different on my small Yamaha grand at home as opposed to the Clavinova Thematic Grand voice at church.

Marvelous Grace (Grace Greater Than Our Sin with Amazing Grace) Daniel B. Howner traditional American Melody ar Tom Fettke

First third of prelude ... for First Church of Christ, Scientist ... this on my piano at home tonight .. sounds quite different on accousitc compared to Clavinova.

JBW plays Bartok "Quasi Adagio"

Lots of technique to learn from this piece ... phrasing, changing dynamics differently in each hand, accents .... and it's Bartok!

Audiation: The Foundation of Music Learning Theory

alfred.com Music Learning Theory—have you heard of it? Music Learning Theory, or MLT for short, is an explanation developed by Dr. Edwin Gordon of how we learn when we learn music.

[07/11/19]   MH will be attending Virginia Tech beginning in the fall. I am very happy for her but am sad for me. We have been in each other's musical lives since she was in elementary school.
We met when she joined my elementary handbell choir at church, and later began taking piano lessons, then flute lessons. I will miss her sorely!

Here she plays "Summer Evening" by David Karp. The laptop I was using cut off the video without any notification. I am including the portion that is available. When we tried again, Bonne Chance encouraged and consoled her by approaching the keyboard .. he had never come so close while she was playing before. I think he liked what he heard!

Lead On, O King Eternal arr by Jay Rouse

Music by Henry T. Smart; Words by Ernest W. Shurtleff

"Peace" by Jay Rouse

Jay Rouse arranged "Wonderful Peace" by W. G. Cooper. The lyrics below were written by W. D. Cornell.

1. Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight
Rolls a melody sweeter than psalm;
In celestial-like strains it unceasingly falls
O’er my soul like an infinite calm.
o Refrain:
Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father above!
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray
In fathomless billows of love!
2. What a treasure I have in this wonderful peace,
Buried deep in the heart of my soul,
So secure that no power can mine it away,
While the years of eternity roll!
3. I am resting tonight in this wonderful peace,
Resting sweetly in Jesus’ control;
For I’m kept from all danger by night and by day,
And His glory is flooding my soul!
4. And I think when I rise to that city of peace,
Where the Author of peace I shall see,
That one strain of the song which the ransomed will sing
In that heavenly kingdom will be:
5. Ah soul, are you here without comfort and rest,
Marching down the rough pathway of time?
Make Jesus your friend ere the shadows grow dark;
Oh, accept this sweet peace so sublime!
