ACCESS Partnerships increases the abilities of businesses and community organizations to partner for community well-being and sustainability.

ACCESS-HW helps businesses, NGOs, and government agencies create partnerships to improve health and sustainability in the workplace and the community. We build networks of interested organizations and help them learn from each other how to partner as they build the trust and skills needed to partner successfully. What is unique about our approach is that we work from the perspective of businesses on how to engage them most effectively.

ACCESS-Health Worldwide (ACCESS-HW) helps businesses, non-government organizations (NGOs), and public sector agencies create partnerships to improve workplace and community health and sustainability. We focus on building partnerships at the local level that increase access to health-related resources, reflect the voice of communities, and help businesses transition from charity to investments contributing to sustainability. As greater attention is focused on how to increase business involvement in development, more information is available on businesses partnering with organizations in other sectors to address development challenges. However, there are still few opportunities for organizations to reach a deeper level of engagement so they can learn from existing partnerships to improve their own ability to partner. ACCESS-HW has developed a unique approach to meet this need. Our approach is based on perspectives and experiences of businesses around the world and echoed by those from other sectors. We build networks of businesses, NGOs and others and help them meet regularly to • Learn how to partner from each other while building the relationships, trust and skills needed to build partnerships with results that can be sustained. • Describe how their partnerships work so peers, locally and globally, can learn from them. • Brainstorm with peers on partnering issues such as how to find the right partner, communicate across sectors, and measure partnership outcomes. We produce tools on partnering issues based on these exchanges. Materials are posted on our website, www.accesshealthworldwide.org that serves as a learning site on how to partner. In 2007 ACCESS-HW launched a project in Indonesia with funding from the Ford Foundation. The project is now an Indonesian NGO that advises the Indonesian Government on partnering with the private sector (businesses and NGOs). It manages a steadily growing network of nearly two hundred businesses from a variety of industries and NGOs with a wide range of development interests. They work with each other and the public sector to improve health and sustainability in the workplace and communities. . ACCESS-HW was created and is directed by Alene H. Gelbard, PhD of the Public Health Institute (PHI). ACCESS-HW is staffed by experts with national and international experience in all sectors on a range of development issues. PHI is an independent, nonprofit 501c3 organization dedicated to promoting the health, well-being and quality of life of individuals across the nation and around the world.

Mission: ACCESS Partnerships Helps... - Businesses and community organizations in a given area develop solutions to overcome obstacles they see to partnering. - Individuals build cross-sector partnerships based on practitioner experience. - Individual businesses and community organizations increase internal capabilities for cross-sector partnering. - Businesses and community organization partners tell their partnership stories

General information

Health is a key component of sustainable development. Half of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by governments worldwide to achieve sustainable development in the 21st century call for reductions in poverty and hunger, child mortality, maternal mortality, and the spread of infectious diseases. Achieving these goals requires more health resources to reach more women. Companies can reach more women with health resources through the workplace and in communities. Many already do, most often in partnerships with local governments and NGOs and through their Corporate Responsibility (CR) programs. They see better health and sustainable community development as benefits to their business.
