Kindred is at the forefront of providing hospice care for veterans.

Gary is the VP of Hospice Operations for Kindred in the High Plains Region. He has worked with Kindred on and off since 2002. Prior to working at Kindred, Gary served for 12 years as a Sergeant in the Army National Guard – 24th Medical Company Air Ambulance based out of Lincoln, Nebraska, and was deployed in 1990 as an Army medic on a medivac helicopter during the Desert Shield/ Desert Storm battles. “We were stationed in Rafha, Saudi Arabia, and flew missions to support the ongoing air assault and ground war,” Gary shared. “Many of our patients were enemy soldiers as our forces pushed towards Baghdad.”

Gary is deeply involved with the We Honor Veterans Program and he shared why this is important to him: “I have personally held the hand of a dying soldier and know the sacrifice that our nation’s heroes have given to allow us to enjoy this great nation,” Gary said. “My work with hospice provides the best last gift we could give back to our veterans, and that is to ensure their final chapter in life gives them the reconciliation they need and leave them with a feeling that all they have sacrificed was worth it.”

Gary reflected on Kindred’s involvement with veterans programs and shared his thoughts: “Kindred is a veteran-friendly company that supports our efforts to not only care for veterans through all lines of service, they also encourage veterans to work here as well. Having a veteran caring for a fellow veteran allows for a connection between patient and caregiver, thereby facilitating trust and understanding of the specific needs of a soldier.”

“Through our We Honor Veterans program, Kindred has sponsored several Honor Flights, where soldiers are brought together and travel to Washington D. C. to celebrate and honor their service as well as to remember their brothers and sisters in arms,” Gary said.

Gary shared how Kindred Hospice plans to improve the care provided to veterans who are patients. “Kindred is focusing its efforts to elevate all of our Hospice programs to reach the highest level. In addition, we are leading the industry with an intentional approach to end-of-life care for veterans by rolling out and piloting a new care plan specific for veterans that will be used by all hospice providers. Our clinical teams are working on continuing education to build on current knowledge and create a higher level of capacity to become the expert in caring for a dying veteran.”

A caregiver is anyone who provides help to another person in need, such as an ill spouse or partner, a disabled child, or an aging relative. However, family members who are actively caring for an older adult often don't self-identify as a "caregiver."

Recognizing this role can help caregivers receive the support they need. If this sounds like you or someone you know, check out these tips:
