Meet Our Team!!

Laura Harders is an integral part of the Sterling Lighting marketing and media team. She is a native of the Northern Virginia area, having grown up in and still living in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. She attended the University of Virginia and majored in German Literature & Language with a minor in Sociology. Shortly after graduating she met and eventually married Patrick; today they reside in a renovated 1901 farmhouse and have two children, Ben and Abby, an American Mastiff named Mosby Mabel, and a Bearded Dragon Lizard named Lizzie. Laura began helping with Patrick’s lighting career after the birth of their first child and she has previously filled various roles assisting with his administrative and marketing teams. She currently has a supporting role with both Sterling Lighting and Enlightened Lighting's marketing and PR efforts, frequently does TV segments about home improvement, saving money, or family fun, and has run her DC-area blog, ‪BeltwayBargainMom.com‬, for 11 years.

We asked her a few questions so you could learn a bit more about her!

Q. What is your role at Sterling Lighting?

A. I assist with public relations, marketing, media, and special projects.

Q. What are 3 words you’d use to describe Sterling Lighting?

A. Innovative, dedicated, passionate

Q. What are your top 3 podcast or book recommendations?

A. Book: The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
Podcast: That Sounds Fun with Annie F. Downs
Podcast: WorkLife with Adam Grant

Q. If you could swap places with someone for a day - who would you pick?

A. That's a tough one! I'd probably want to switch places with Jenna Bush Hager to see what it's like to host the Today Show and be the daughter of a past US President.

Q. If you won the lottery -what would be your first purchase?

A. I'm practical (to a fault), so I'd pay off our mortgage first.

Q. If you could witness any historical event, what would you want to see?

A. Hard to pick one! Creation of the world, Jesus performing miracles, or the end of WWII.

Q. What is your cellphone wallpaper?

A. The word "Forge" with a floral gold background.
I picked "forge" as my word of the year because it epitomizes a desire to form or create, while the verb form means to move forward with slow and steady progress or to move with a sudden burst of speed and power.

Q. How do you define success?

A. Success is not necessarily happiness, but having achieved something that fills you up or finding purpose in your life.

Q. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

A. Failures help you grow in ways you never knew you could.

Q. What’s your favorite non-work pastime?

A. I enjoy hand-lettering (modern calligraphy), plus baking and decorating desserts.

Q. What is your favorite family tradition?

A. My favorite summer tradition has to be going to the Outer Banks each year for a week-long family beach trip. My parents did this with my sister and I growing up, and it is something we have continued on now that I have my own kids.

Q. What song is the theme song for your life?

A. You'll Never Walk Alone

Q. What is your favorite thing about Sterling Lighting?

A. I love the motivation and drive our team has always had to create truly exceptional landscape lighting fixtures with features that make installation and service streamlined for the lighting professional.
