[02/02/14]   Embrace new technologies.
Smart business owners should take advantage of new tools to manage their business and leverage social media to grow their consumer base, Coyne advises. “Businesses of all sizes are using electronic transfers so that they can send and receive money in real time,” she says, adding that money-management software can be useful in cash-flow visibility. Coyne also suggests that businesses use social media to reach new customers, but also to find and network with business owners in the same industry that aren’t competition. “Business owners want to connect in a way that’s meaningful. This is an area that we continue to innovate in ourselves.”

[02/02/14]   Make use of contract workers.
Coyne says that many female owners are thinking about growth and want to expand, but are still nervous about the economy, health-care costs and changes to the tax code. She’s seeing many use contract workers instead of making the commitment to hire full-time workers. It’s a good time for it, says Coyne, as so many talented people have been displaced by the bad market and are looking for work.

[01/28/14]   Remember, this is business.
“The hardest thing for women has been the human capital side,” says Coyne. “Women business owners treat employees like family and are slow to make decisions around staffing.” She recalls one struggling female owner who desperately needed to cut workers but felt terrible to do it. After laboring over the decision for months, she finally decided to place several people on her 20-member staff on part-time schedules. They were thrilled to be given the opportunity they had wanted all along—a steady income and more time with their families. The moral: Talk to your staff, and make the decision that’s good for them but best for business.

[01/27/14]   Form an advisory group.
“The other distinguishing factor of successful female business owners was that they often had formal or informal advisory groups. We’ve encouraged our clients to tap into that expertise.” According to Coyne, working with other business owners is critical. Advisory groups can inform finances, but also offer strategies on marketing the business and managing vendors.

[01/26/14]   Crunch the numbers.
A couple years ago, Coyne commissioned a report that analyzed the strategies of successful women-owned business. She discovered that financial knowledge does matter. “Women with high-growth companies really ran the business by the numbers, understood cash flow, and had a handle on balance sheets,” she says. “They focused on using financial reporting to grow their business.” Do you need an MBA? No, just a mentor, business partner or good accountant, says Coyne.

[01/25/14]   though it's important to start your business with enough capital, that doesn't mean that every business needs piles and piles of money to get off the ground. Plenty of mega-successful businesses were started on a shoestring: Apple Computer started in a garage; Hewlett-Packard started in the dining room of the Packard home; the list goes on and on. Generally speaking, a business that can find creative, thrifty ways to provide its product or service -- especially in its early days -- will typically find more success than a business that adopts a "spend more money" approach.

[01/24/14]   For businesses with moderate to significant overhead, it is crucial to start the business with adequate funds. Starting a business without enough money to ride out the early lean days (described as "undercapitalization") is the most common reason that businesses fail. Undercapitalization is less of an issue with small service-based businesses that don't have many fixed expenses. But businesses with overhead such as rent, salaries for employees, utility bills, inventory, equipment, insurance, or other fixed costs absolutely need to plan carefully and pull together enough funding to support the fledgling business as it works up to speed.

[01/22/14]   Of course, there's a lot more to launching a successful small business than dealing with bureaucratic requirements. For starters, you'll need to have a sound business idea, and you'll need to be able to develop good management skills to guide it to success. This is where you should put your mental energy and good ideas; don't waste precious brain cells worrying about the legal hurdles.

[01/21/14]   You can usually start a sole proprietorship (the legal term for a one-owner business) or a partnership (a business with more than one owner) by registering with just one government office. And for business owners who want protection from personal liability for business debts -- often referred to by the legal jargon "limited liability" -- the simplest corporations or limited liability companies (LLCs) require only a couple more registration tasks to complete. In other words, once you have your business idea developed to a certain degree, all you need to do is visit a few government offices, fill out some forms, and pay some fees -- and suddenly your idea will have become an actual, legitimate business.

[01/20/14]   Don't sweat the bureaucracy. A lot of would-be entrepreneurs, women and men alike, find themselves stuck on the verge of taking the leap into starting a business, but confused about how to tackle the legal rules of getting started. This hang-up is always grounded more in fear than reality; the truth is that clearing the bureaucratic hurdles isn't usually a big deal.

[01/18/14]   Remember that small businesses can be quite profitable, particularly if they target an untapped (or undertapped) niche. It's almost always possible to find profitable niche markets if you look carefully.

[01/16/14]   Start a business that works for you and fits with your personal life.
There are no rules as to what a "real" business looks like. For some businesspeople, success might mean an international operation with hundreds of employees and annual revenues in the tens of millions. For others, a small consulting firm or artisan business that pays a healthy salary and allows generous personal freedom might be considered the pinnacle of success. The key is to take the time early in the planning process to consider this question and decide for yourself what your ideal vision is for your business and your personal life.

[01/14/14]   Don't forget the follow-up.

After your meal, you'll want to be sure to follow up. Send a brief thank you email and include any documents or relevant information that will add value. This could include a pitch deck for new clients, resources with more information, or work that was promised. Follow up in a timely manner, and if the work or information you need to provide will take a few days, make sure to share a deadline in your email.

[01/13/14]   Skip the alcohol.

Unless you're on the set of a certain throwback ad-agency television show, you shouldn't order alcohol with your meal. The exception is a celebratory meal -- though, even then, you should keep your intake to one glass.

[01/12/14]   Who pays the bill?
It's generally straightforward: If you invite, you pay the bill. (In most cases the person setting up the lunch date is the one who benefits from advice or new business). When colleagues meet for lunch to catch up, generally everyone chips in. The exception would be celebratory lunches, where the guest of honor wouldn't be expected to pay. You should always go into a meal prepared to pay for yourself and your lunch date. When you find the meeting valuable, paying the bill shows that you appreciate his or her efforts.

[01/11/14]   Who picks the spot?

If you're inviting, offer some locations (ideally close to your lunch date's office) and let him or her choose. If someone has invited you, take the invitee's lead. In either case, be clear about any date or time restrictions you may have.

[01/10/14]   Who should be invited?

Who you invite will depend on the purpose of your lunch date. Do you need a final decision from a client or colleague? Invite the person or people who can make the decision to move forward on a project or sign a contract. If you're floating ideas or wooing potential clients, you'll want someone from the creative side of your business at the table. Is this strictly a meeting of the minds? Whether you're hoping to work through a problem or seeking advice and mentorship from a senior colleague, you'll want to keep the meal intimate.

[01/09/14]   Be prepared.

Whether you're the host or the guest, you'll want to plan ahead for your business lunch. For instance, look up your lunch companion's LinkedIn profile, check out their work and if you're wooing a potential client, study their website. If you're meeting with a junior colleague or someone you may mentor, spend a few minutes pulling together a list of books, websites, and other resources they may find helpful. When you're seeking information or advice, be sure to have several questions prepared in advance.
