How/where can I donate dog food?
It was an honor interviewing Journey and telling her story!

Anyone make braided fleece dog toys like these? We could use as many as you would like to donate (especially for large dogs). We put one in each of the backpacks for homeless dogs.

The end of eviction moratorium is having a significant impact on our pet food pantry with more families experiencing financial strain.
Add to that the predicted pet food shortage with many businesses already experiencing supply difficulties. We have had to temporarily increase our distribution days to accommodate the need. As of tonight we have 57 cans of PATE canned cat food, which will not last more than one (two at most) distribution day. We could use your help! Please consider donating PATE formula canned cat food (brands are not important). You can drop them off to us any day/ any time at 238 Old Alfred Road, East Waterboro or you can have it sent directly to us from Chewy or Amazon to 238 Old Alfred Road, East Waterboro ME 04030. If it is easier to donate money and have me do the shopping that is wonderful too! Thank you - I greatly appreciate you all. ****This is not post to express your political beliefs regarding the eviction moratorium, this is strictly about need. We are judgement free. Comments violating our judgement free policy will be deleted.

Six Dog Food Brands Recalled Due to Dangerous Mold Toxin

Here we go again! Another dog food recall involving multiple brands including Evolve & Triumph. The one is for high levels of aflatoxin which is created by mold from rotten corn (which basically means the manufacturer used rotten corn to make the food & Plowed it to go to market 😡). Please check the list carefully & your dog food supply. Follow the recall closely, typically recalls expand to include more brands & formulas in the days & weeks following the initial recall.

I am making an adjustment to tomorrows Distribution times. Distribution will be 9:30am to 1:30pm. I apologize for the last minute adjustment but I am opening 30 minutes earlier than planned to make up for closing 30 minutes early. We have been blessed by so many wonderful friends with food donations and we are extremely grateful. Now I need to do the unpleasant task of asking for financial donations. The reality is we need money to continue doing what we do, to cover standard cost of business expenses. We have a busy event season which means printed materials (I do as many and as much as possible on my home printer but some things need to be professionally printed), we need new banners and some "Enter" & "Exit" signs at the pantry for the safety of our clients. I run the pantry as bare bones as possible but no organization can run expense free. Our latest fundraiser while a lot of fun is not generating the interest and donations I hoped for. If half of our followers donated $10 or $20 each our expenses would be covered and we would have a small cushion for the unexpected. I know you have a lot of groups and organizations pleading for your donation and I know everyone has less expendable income. With the pandemic came a greater need for our services and we met those needs but it strained our resources immensely. So when you are deciding where to donate your hard earned money we would be most grateful if you thought of No Bowl Empty 2 / Backpacks for Homeless Dogs.

Nadine is hard at work setting the pantry up. We lost a lot of inventory when the building in Standish sustained storm damage so our inventory is low but we need to get storage containers & shelving before we can stock up. Keep following us to watch our progress & keep up-to-date on our Grand Re-Opening!

WE ARE MOVING!

No Bowl Empty 2 Pet Food Pantry/Backpacks for Homeless Dogs has outgrown our space so we are on the move. NBE2/BPHD will be moving back to Nadine's garage in East Waterboro. It is easy to find and the driveway is set up for easy access. Nadine has set up and run the pet food pantry for many years and she has it down to a science so it is a very positive move for NBE2/BPHD and the clients we serve.

Grand Opening will be announced soon. Nadine is making sure that things are done right and cannot open until we have the storage containers necessary to properly store the food. We are hard at work getting things set up.

Please consider a Sponsorship to help the pantry help pets in the community.

We still have 4 Silver Paw and 4 Bronze Paw Sponsorships available.

Silver Paw - $85
This level has 4 available sponsorships
*provides one 30 gal storage container for treats

Need met ty all

Hi y’all Journey here , I have a disabled man with little to no income and he is in need of some dog food for his dog. This is the kind he uses . I actually got him to change to this brand a year ago and his dog is thriving so I really don’t want him to have to change what he’s eating. If you can help him out you can drop it off at my house or have it delivered here to keep his privacy. Please know he and I and of course his dog appreciate your help very much! Thank you , Journey

Judy, a purebred pointer, was the mascot of several ships in the Pacific, and was captured by the Japanese in 1942 and taken to a prison camp. There she met Aircraftsman Frank Williams, who shared his small portion of rice with her.

Judy raised morale in the POW camp, and also barked when poisonous snakes, crocodiles or even tigers approached the prisoners. When the prisoners were shipped back to Singapore, she was smuggled out in a rice sack, never whimpering or betraying her presence to the guards.

The next day, that ship was torpedoed. Williams pushed Judy out of a porthole in an attempt to save her life, even though there was a 15-foot drop to the sea. He made his own escape from the ship, but was then recaptured and sent to a new POW camp.

He didn't know if Judy had survived, but soon he began hearing stories about a dog helping drowning men reach pieces of debris after the shipwreck. And when Williams arrived at the new camp, he said: "I couldn’t believe my eyes! As I walked through the gate, a scraggly dog hit me square between the shoulders and knocked me over. I’d never been so glad to see the old girl!"

They spent a year together at that camp in Sumatra. "Judy saved my life in so many ways," said Williams. "But the greatest of all was giving me a reason to live. All I had to do was look into those weary, bloodshot eyes and ask myself: 'What would happen to her if I died?' I had to keep going."

Once hostilities ceased, Judy was then smuggled aboard a troopship heading back to Liverpool. In England, she was awarded the Dickin Medal (the "Victoria Cross" for animals) in May 1946. Her citation reads: "For magnificent courage and endurance in Japanese prison camps, which helped to maintain morale among her fellow prisoners, and also for saving many lives through her intelligence and watchfulness".

At the same time, Frank Williams was awarded the PDSA's White Cross of St. Giles for his devotion to Judy. Frank and Judy spent a year after the war visiting the relatives of English POWs who had not survived, and Frank said that Judy "always provided a comforting presence to the families."

When Judy finally died at the age of 13, Frank spent two months building a granite and marble memorial in her memory, which included a plaque describing her life story.
