The BEST Black Bean Burger

The "Best Black Bean Burger" Recipe

The BEST Black Bean Burger is made with fresh ingredients and is totally FOOL PROOF. This healthy recipe is fast and easy for a quick dinner idea.

For the Burger:
15 ounce can black beans , drained and rinsed
1/2 green bell pepper
1/2 small onion
2 cloves garlic , peeled
1 large egg , beaten (*see note below)
2/3 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
1 Tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon cumin
salt and freshly ground black pepper , to taste
5 hamburger buns
For the Chipotle Mayo Sauce:
1 cup mayonnaise
2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
1 Tablespoon adobo sauce (from a can of chipotle peppers in adobo sauce)
2 teaspoons lime juice
salt and freshly ground black pepper
hamburger buns
desired burger toppings: lettuce, tomato, etc.

To make the Burger:
Place rinsed and drained black beans in a bowl. If needed, blot them with a paper towel to remove any extra moisture. Place in a large bowl and mash well with a fork.
Place the bell pepper, onion and garlic in a food processor and process until finely minced.
Transfer mixture to a fine mesh strainer to remove the excess water. (Remove as much moisture as you can--if it's too wet, the burger wont hold together as well.)
Add the strained vegetable mixture to the bowl with the black beans. Add the chili powder, cumin and salt and pepper and stir to combine.
Add beaten egg and mix. Stir in bread crumbs. Form mixture into 4 or 5 patties.
At this point you can choose to:
Grill the burgers on a well oiled grill for about 4-5 minutes on each side.
Bake them at 375 degrees F on a lightly oiled baking sheet, for 10 minutes on each side.
Cook them on your stove using a grill pan, for 4-5 minutes on each side.
Refrigerate them for later.
Freeze them, covered, in a freezer ziplock bag for a quick weeknight dinner in the future.
For the Chipotle Mayo Sauce:
Add all the ingredients to a food processor or blender and puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve burgers on a white or whole wheat bun topped with a spoonful of chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, cheese, avocado, or any other desired toppings! Enjoy!
Serve with one of these healthy side dishes!

*for a vegan burger, substitute the egg with 1 Tbs. flax meal + 3 Tbs. hot water (mix this together separately).

9 Tips To Keep Your Back Healthy (by The National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke)

1. Always stretch before exercise or other strenuous physical activity.
2. Don’t slouch when standing or sitting. The lower back can support a person’s weight most easily when the curvature is reduced. When standing, keep your weight balanced on your feet.
3. At home or work, make sure work surfaces are at a comfortable height.
4. Sit in a chair with good lumbar support and proper position and height for the task. Keep shoulders back. Switch sitting positions often and periodically walk around the office or gently stretch muscles to relieve tension. A pillow or rolled-up towel placed behind the small of the back can provide some lumbar support. During prolonged periods of sitting, elevate feet on a low stool or a stack of books.
5. Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.
6. Sleeping on one’s side with the knees drawn up in a fetal position can help open up the joints in the spine and relieve pressure by reducing the curvature of the spine. Always sleep on a firm surface.
7. Avoid lifting objects that are too heavy. Lift from the knees, pull the stomach muscles in, and keep the head down and in line with a straight back. When lifting, keep objects close to the body. Do not twist when lifting.
8. Maintain proper nutrition and diet to reduce and prevent excessive weight gain, especially weight around the waistline that taxes lower back muscles. A diet with sufficient daily intake of calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D helps to promote new bone growth.
9. Quit smoking. Smoking reduces blood flow to the lower spine, which can contribute to spinal disc degeneration. Smoking also increases the risk of osteoporosis and impedes healing. Coughing due to heavy smoking also may cause back pain.


Kayla Johnson, Fitness Expert Shares Her Best Tips for Getting Fit (It’s Not Counting Calories)

When it comes to healthy living, the internet is saturated with diets, workouts, and the next new study, but if anything, it only makes tackling your health and wellness journey harder. How can you find success if you don’t know where to start or what you should believe?

To get the real answers, I asked fitness expert and Team Isagenix ambassador Kayla Johnson for her best tips on living a healthier lifestyle, and her answers are delightfully down to earth. Here’s what she said:

When it comes to goal setting, take the pressure off.
“The more I learn, the more I realize the brain sometimes works in opposite ways,” said Kayla. “If we obsess on thoughts like, ‘I need to lose weight’ or ‘I should eliminate dessert,’ it can make it harder to reach your goals.”

Throw the feeling of needing to be perfect out the door. With whatever you’re trying to accomplish, make it a balanced lifestyle change that allows for mistakes. Remember to forgive yourself and move on. Reaching a goal is about getting better over time, not just in the immediate weeks or months.

When it comes to eating, be more aware.
Kayla acknowledges that even for her, it’s easy to finish off the kids’ lunches or pop in a handful of chocolate chips after dinner, but little things add up over the whole day. Try to be aware of what you’re consuming.

“I may be going against the grain, but I’m not a fan of food logging every single day,” Kayla said. “Food logging can be a great way to check in with yourself every once in a while, but to me, logging every day brings about a good versus bad mentality. The instant I see calories in the red zone (when I’ve eaten over my allotted amount for the day), I chalk the whole day up as a bad day and end up eating whatever I want, because the day is already ‘ruined.’”

Instead of food logging and counting calories, try focusing on how you feel, minding the quality of food you’re eating, and forming a healthier relationship with food.
