Happy Hour 3 To 7. Drink of the Day: Colada Morada
Halloween has come and gone, but Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is upon us. For many, this is more important than Halloween could ever be. In honor of the day we are bringing back the Colada Morada, a drink consumed at every graveyard in Ecuador as people remember their loved ones that have passed on but have not been forgotten. In Ecuador, Dia de los Muertos is a very special day. As you approach any given Ecuadorian cemetery on this day, the feeling of celebration and festivity fills the air. The entrance of the cemetery will be lined with food and beverage vendors. Flowers are everywhere and children are playing games under tents as their parents bring food to be enjoyed at the grave-site for their deceased loved ones. Most importantly, a plate and a drink will be provided for the dead. The Colad Morada is a mix of berries, pineapple, purple corn, and herbs. The mix of ingredients is then served hot with or without alcohol. Come in and enjoy the Colada Morada and be part of remembering what the Day of the Dead is really about!
Recipe for the Colada Morada:
(recipe makes a pitcher)
1/2 -1 cup purple corn flour or corn starch
2 cups blackberries
2.5 cups blueberries
2 cups strawberries, sliced
1 small pineapple, peeled & diced
5 cinnamon sticks
1 ishpingo herb (similar in flavor to cloves, found in Ecuador)
4 whole cloves (clavor de olor)
5 allspice berries (pimienta dulce)
2.5 cups panela or brown sugar
A few lemon verbena leaves
A few lemongrass leaves
3 liters of water
Add 2 oz of rum to each 3 oz serving.
