Why Juvenile Justice Reform Needs Child Welfare at the Table

youthtoday.org

"If we know that children involved in the child welfare system are at greater risk of truancy, behavior disorders, mental health disorders and delinquency, shouldn’t we address those issues in their early years and work towards prevention and building resiliency rather than managing them later in life when the problems are compounded?"

Pushed out of their homes, youth find a place of 'dignity and value'

indystar.com

“’They’re not necessarily runaways, but more like pushaways,’ said Mike Elliott, director of development, in an earlier interview. ‘More young people are facing crises where they are having to leave their homes to protect themselves. 63% had experienced child abuse and/or neglect;
30% had a current mental health issue;
90% had offended while under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs;
38% had a parent or sibling who had been imprisoned; and
62% had been suspended or expelled from school.
These statistics are most startling at the pointy end of the youth justice system."
