CHAP is happy to announce a new partnership with Chief Seattle Club! Chief Seattle Club is located in the city's historic Pioneer Square district and provides a safe and sacred place to rest, revive and nurture the spirit of urban Native peoples in need. We believe in the power of our ancestral ways, and preserving them means fostering a sense of community among those without one to call their own. Anyone with American Indian or Alaska Native heritage, regardless of tribe, is invited to participate in our programs and make use of our resources. Their mission is to create a welcoming place of support, acceptance and ceremony for Seattle's native population.

Family homelessness is at a crisis point in Seattle. Help us mobilize as a community to respond to this emergency and get unsheltered families out of tents and cars and inside this holiday. Every donation made to Mary's Place in our stores will be matched through Dec 31.

The Community Health Advancement Program (CHAP) has been running a diagnose-and-treat dermatology clinic at the Downtown Emergency Service Center shelter since 1994! With medical student volunteers and on-site support from local physicians, the biweekly clinic provides care to many of Seattle's homeless adults. Volunteers are provided the unique opportunity to hone their clinical skills, provide treatment, and engage in meaningful conversations with members of our community's underserved population. We need your help to keep this amazing clinic running!

We are seeking **1-2 more clinic coordinators** for the coming academic year! Applicants must be Term 3 students at UWSOM. Coordinators have the unique role of organizing and attending clinics, engaging with providers from UW, DESC, Mary’s Place, and beyond, and ensuring each clinic runs smoothly. If you are interested, please complete the BRIEF Catalyst application below by **Friday, December 16th!**

If you have any questions, please contact CHAP Program Coordinator Danielle Bienz, at

More interested in the CHAP Derm Clinic? Fall Training will be on Tuesday, September 27th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm (T-639)

We invite you to an event for students interested in participating in the Community Health Advancement Program (CHAP) Dermatology Clinic. This event also welcomes anyone interested in the healthcare needs of Seattle's homeless population, those with a specific interest in dermatology, and any student looking to sharpen their clinical skills!

This will be an orientation to the Community Health Advancement Program (CHAP) Derm Clinic serving clients at the Downtown Emergency Service Center emergency shelter. Learn about working with the community served by DESC, and addressing the common, yet often overlooked dermatological conditions, prevalent in the homeless community in Seattle.

This training is required for anyone wishing to volunteer at the Derm Clinic this year. You will hear more about the logistics of the volunteering processes at the training.

*Information about CHAP Derm Clinic*
Skin problems are common in the homeless community, but often go untreated due to a variety of economic and social factors. Students initiated this project in collaboration with DESC and the Pioneer Square Clinic based an unmet need of this population. Care is delivered by two medical student teams, each consisting of a pre-clinical (1st or 2nd year) student and a clinical (3rd or 4th year) student. The teams are precepted by a volunteer attending physician.

Thank you! Please contact Danielle Bienz - - with any questions.

Want to participate in a CHAP Foot Care or Teeth & Toes Clinic this year? Come join us for our Fall Training on Monday, October 17th from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in T-439!

The School of Medicine, specifically the Community Health Advancement Program (CHAP), School of Nursing, and School of Dentistry are teaming up again this year on the Teeth & Toes Clinic! In order to participate in Teeth & Toes at any point this 2016-2017 year, all student providers must participate in this interdisciplinary training.

You will learn the skills necessary to conduct proficient foot care and oral exams, in addition to health education techniques and strategies for encouraging positive health behaviors by low-income clients. Students who participate in Teeth & Toes develop a toolkit of both clinical and health promotion skills for working with the homeless community, for whom quality foot and oral care can be a potential life-saver.

This training is required to participate in any Teeth & Toes Events or CHAP Foot Care Clinics at DESC, Mary's Place, ROOTS, or our newest community partner, Chief Seattle Club.
