Westside School (Seattle, WA)

Westside School. Critical Thinking. Communication. Collaboration. Creativity. Character.

Westside School was founded in 1981 and has grown from 11 to 300+ students in grades prekindergarten through 8th grade.

With roots that started in West Seattle’s co-op community, Westside School offers a progressive, integrated, project based curriculum. Westside values small class size, collaboration, empathy, and is an inclusive, multi-age community where older students mentor younger students and each other. The walls of the building contain but don’t limit the program – teachers are empowered to take advantage of learning opportunities as they arise.

The parent community is integral to the success of Westside School – they share responsibility for making Westside the rich, special community that it is.

All lower school students at Westside participate in musical instrument, vocal and movement classes throughout the year as part of our Performing Arts program. Here's 3rd grade practicing for their upcoming musical performance, "Swamped!"

"'THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal.'

Walk into 8th grade Language Arts today and you’ll quickly notice that something is… different.

Students are screaming out the words they are reading on papers in front of them while others speak in little more than a whisper. Some don blindfolds, others draw cartoons instead of using any words at all. One student is talking exclusively about bananas, another is taking exuberant stretch breaks every five minutes, and another is only speaking in alliteration..."

4th grade is planning our first ever Wolf Fest- an event for all lower school to spend time together as a community and have a lot of fun. Today, they visited 2nd and 3rd grade to ask everyone about their favorite games, type of music to listen to, desserts, potato chip flavors and more. There was even one student asking "haunted house: yes or no?"!

It was very cool to see 4th grade students really taking in everyone's thoughts to ensure that Wolf Fest will be an event that is fun for all.

Busy, busy first days of school! It is so much fun to have everyone back on campus.
