DO THIS! Saturday Stretch with Mike Hardin.

Over the years I have asked a lot from my body... I asked it to pull a 39k pound semi truck 75ft, it said yes. I asked it not only to train for but to run a 50 mile race in Montana, it said yes. I asked it to go without sleep and do endless baby rocking sessions as a new Dad, and it said yes! In all these cases my low back tightened up and was on the verge of going out.... This QL (Quadratus Lumborum) stretch saved me a number of times.

The QL loves to take on what it shouldn't and to guard if your low back feels threatened. This stretch is a great daily stretch for 30 secs to prevent it from being tight. There are a ton of progressions for the QL we can give you at Heroics but I thought this would get you started.

As I get on my side you'll see the first progression... forearm down. This is the easiest and can be a stretch for most. Make sure that you are truly on your side and that your pelvis is vertical. Most people will wiggle out of the stretch by rocking the hips back, if you do this you won't get a stretch. Once in the stretch, simply breathe and let the hip fall to the floor and you should feel it in the lower quadrant of your back.

For a more intense stretch you would go on your hand. This gives you the full length of the arm therefore a bigger stretch. Go easy on this, there's no points for suffering.
