Dear Members and Friends of Broadview Community United Church of Christ,
It’s hard to believe that I am already celebrating my second Christmas with you as your pastor. I’m so grateful to be part of this church and for your welcome, love and support for David and me. This past year has been a challenging year filled with much joy and much sadness both for our family and for so many members of our church. I am convinced that care and love that we show one another is now more important than ever and is vital in supporting us through the difficult times as well as enhancing times of joy and celebration.
As we celebrate the birth of Christ, we are reminded that God came to us in the birth of Jesus through the power of vulnerability and weakness. So often we long for a God who will take charge and make things better but our God respects us and our freedom and enters our lives not to change outcomes but to transform hearts. The miracle of the incarnation is not that God comes to rescue us but rather God comes to change us so that we may change the world.
As we join with one another to form and build Christian community we ask that the power of God will come to us and transform us so that we may be a light amid darkness, hope for the hopeless and love for those who are isolated and abandoned. We desire to be the Body of Christ to the surrounding community and a place where all people can gather to give thanks to God and grow spiritually. We desire to grow our impact so that we can alleviate the great suffering that surrounds us. With the help of the Holy Spirit we will do this.
May the Spirit of Christmas be yours now and throughout the New Year!
Blessings of Peace, Joy and Love always,
Pastor Gary Southerton
