I recently attended a screening and discussion of “Her Day In Court,” a film chronicling the astonishing experiences and struggles of pioneering female judges and attorneys in Washington state. Here, Chief Justice Madsen explains how, as a young associate attorney, male partners in her law firm told her to "wear a tight sweater" for appearances in court. Others were instructed to come to work wearing more makeup. Many women attorneys, like Justice Bobbe Bridge, were not allowed at client meetings because their male counterparts were ashamed to show clients a woman (in many cases, the solitary token woman at the firm) was working on their case.
You can learn more about the project and see clips at http://www.wwl.org/legacy.
