Success Spotlight: Bret suffered a traumatic brain injury that led to swelling of his brain. To relieve the pressure from the swelling and prevent his brain’s oxygen supply from being shut off, doctors performed an emergency craniotomy – a surgery that cut a flap into his skull.

Unfortunately, Bret’s skull flap became infected and he required an aggressive antibiotic course to help him recover. He came to Kindred Hospital for continuation of treatment to reverse the infection and to begin therapy to regain his mobility and strength.

At Kindred, Bret was always motivated to participate fully in his physical and occupational therapy. His team of therapists worked with Bret to help him regain his balance and strength, and to increase his understanding and awareness of safety so he can protect himself from additional injury.

“This is the best stay I’ve had in a hospital,” Bret shared. “You have good physical therapy and the food is amazing compared to other hospitals – and I’ve been to almost every hospital in the state of Washington. Thank you!”

Bret was discharged to his home after a couple of weeks at Kindred, and all of us want to take this opportunity to wish him the best as he continues to recover.

Happy Labor Day!

Success Spotlight: Amy worked in customer service and was living independently with her roommates when her pre-existing medical condition took a turn for the worse and she had to be admitted to a local hospital. She received emergency surgery for deep pelvic wounds and to arrest the development of gangrene. Then Amy came to Kindred Hospital to continue her rehabilitation.

When she was admitted to Kindred, Amy needed significant assistance for all her daily needs, self-care and mobility. She was suffering from extreme pain and emotional distress and had very little tolerance for the slightest movements.

Soon her rehab and wound care team began to help Amy progress toward her goal of regaining her independence and returning home. The beginning of the process was very challenging for both Amy and her caregivers, but each small accomplishment led to new goals as her tolerance for sitting improved and she regained her strength.

“This is a very good place to do your rehabilitation for both wound care and general health and to get back to your baseline,” Amy shared. “The staff is kind and caring – it was a very good experience.”

Eventually, Amy was able to stand with assistance, transfer to her wheelchair and move about on her own, and had regained the ability to care for her daily needs with minimal assistance. Her motivation to return home was stronger than ever as she discharged from Kindred to a rehab facility to continue her journey to recovery.

Amy, all of us at Kindred wish you all the best and hope that you’re able to get back to your home and living life to the fullest very soon!

How New Technology Helps You Stay Independent

www.kindredhealthcare.com

Advances in technology allow healthcare teams to help make decisions quickly and more accurately, which can prevent your symptoms from becoming a trip to the hospital.

One way they can do this is through telemonitoring, which is a service that tracks your vital signs or any changes in status electronically, either in a healthcare facility or in the comfort of home.
