Come learn to sail on the waterways of the Pacific Northwest aboard the 1926 Biloxi schooner "Lavengro"! The Lavengro is the Official Tall Ship of Kitsap County.
Built as the "Helen" in 1926, in Back Bay, Biloxi, Mississippi by Jack Covacevich, for Thomas B. Denegre and his family, the Lavengro now works as a sail training vessel in the Puget Sound. We offer private 6-passenger charters upon request for $100 per hour, regardless of where we sail to, and free public sails every Sunday for the Center for Wooden Boats.
Just over a year after she was hit and holed above the waterline, Schooner Lavengro has regained her COI, meaning she can now carry 23 paying passengers. Whoo Hoo! A new mains'l is top of the list and a new stove is in there someplace.
It's a real pleasure to work with the Coast Guard Seattle Office of Marine Inspection. They really know their way around wooden boats.
Time capsule! One of our first mates found a t-shirt she purchased as a passenger when she and her family sailed on Lavengro in the late 1990's!
[04/06/17] Finally the fire system is armed, wired in and functioning. The individual fire extinguishers are recertifided. Down to going through the paperwork to call the Coast Guard and requesting to begin the process to get a COI.
Thanks to Paul and Kitty we have a new AC/shorepower panel.
Lavengro is working toward getting her COI. Lots of projects done. Three new port side stringers to replace ones removed replacing frames. New fire suppression system. Replace all the lines on the life raft. Rebuild the engine enclosure and aft bulkheads. Plumb both water tanks in and water for the galley and head. New water temp guage and lots of wiring upgrades.
More to do but we are getting closer
Photos from our restoration progress starting in April.
[05/28/16] We keep hearing that AARP has used the Lavengro in a commercial. What's the theme? Has anyone out there taped it? The boat did not receive any money for that inclusion, which seems rather tacky-- in the non-nautical sense of the term,
More good news! Charles takes commissions, so you could have one of his stunning paintings on your wall!

Last night's fundraiser was amazing! We got a good start on the $6K we need for the sails, shared stories with shipmates from decades past, and even had an "old" Helen sailor drop in from Biloxi. Phil Schroeder sailed with the schooner's second owners, the Overings, in the late 60s and we very much enjoyed picking his brain.
Special thanks to the *amazing* Charles Fawcett who created four stunning paintings for our raffle, and to Shawna Williams who added a pen and ink that was sold to a private collector.
