Pottery Northwest

The mission of Pottery Northwest is to develop and promote excellence in the ceramic arts. Pottery Northwest’s goal is to provide a professional facility in an educational atmosphere for the enhancement of skills in the medium of clay.

Pottery Northwest is a professional clay facility comprising 7200 square feet in an early 1900’s brick building at Seattle Center with an adjoining outdoor kiln yard.

Our equipment includes potter’s wheels, a slab roller, an extruder, a spray booth with compressor, clay mixer, and various workshop tools (saws, grinders, etc.). A dedicated glaze area stocks a full complement of materials. We have both electric and gas fired kilns, including soda and raku kilns and – a wood-fired pizza oven. We have recently upgraded our studio heating and lighting systems and added air filtration. There are a variety of semiprivate spaces available for residents.

Residents have 24 hour access to the studio.

In the last week of our annual student show, we would like to encourage you to consider the mission of Sandra Mander’s beautiful ceramic figure. Please read her message below:

“The continuing drought is increasing the desertification of Africa and causing internal displacement of the population. The civil was between North and South Sudan and then the tribal warfare in South Sudan have continued to multiply the population of homeless and starving citizens. Even the refugee camps are not safe from the marauding militias. Women and children are especially vulnerable. Doctors Without Borders and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have both been providing essential medical services and food relief throughout these emergencies. This figure represents the hope of the women for their children in the face of the horrors they are facing.

Please consider making a donation. Every person who makes a donation will have their name entered into a drawing for this ceramic sculpture of a refugee from South Sudan and the history of her migration. 100% of the artist’s portion will be donated to Doctors Without Borders and USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

Thank you for your help.

Sandra Mander”

We NEED your help TODAY!

As you may be aware, the redevelopment of Key Arena has become a hot topic in Seattle again and Pottery Northwest is part of the discussion. Both of the developer's proposals include our space in the redevelopment area of the arena, however neither developer has a clear plan for Pottery Northwest's future.

Mayor Ed Murray plans to make his recommendation in the next few weeks. NOW is our opportunity to make sure Pottery Northwest's future is part of the conversation and part of his recommendations.

Can you take a few minutes TODAY to email Mayor Murray and ask that he considers Pottery Northwest's future in his arena redevelopment recommendations?

It's as simple as these four steps:
1. Click here to use the Mayor Contact Form on the City's website:
http://www.seattle.gov/mayor/get-involved/contact-the-mayor
2. Click "Contact the Mayor's Office"
3. Fill in all requested information
4. Copy and paste the below message (feel free to add something personal!)

Dear Mayor Murray,

I understand you plan to make your recommendations for the Key Arena redevelopment project soon. I ask that when making your recommendations please consider the future of Pottery Northwest, an organization that has been part of our city's creative community for 50 years. As they stand now, neither proposal outlines a clear future for Pottery Northwest and risks the end of this vital community space. No matter which developer is chosen, any new building project should include a space for Pottery Northwest. We must not sacrifice one cultural center to build another.

Thank you for your consideration.

Thank you for your help! We will continue to keep the Pottery family updated on any developments as we fight to make our voices heard!

Sincerely,
James Lobb, Executive Director & the Pottery Northwest Team
