Seattle Central Creative Academy

SCCA, located on the fifth floor at Seattle Central Community College, is home to the college’s Photography and Graphic Design programs.

Students enjoy an $8 million dollar facility that features integrated classes and shared resources, plus studios and labs that simulate real-world, professional environments. What’s more, the facility incorporates the equipment and workflow of professional design studios into the curriculum.
With 38,000 square feet of space, the Academy features natural lighting throughout with sweeping views of Downtown Seattle and Puget Sound from expansive west-facing windows and a spectacular view of Mt. Rainier to the southeast. Cal Anderson Park to the east possesses a quiet charm with the water sculpture, park benches and tree-lined greenery.

Graphic Design
Graduates of the Graphic Design Program get to work when they leave us. Our curriculum is strong on graphic design fundamentals, yet explores and adapts to emerging communication technologies. We pride ourselves in keeping our curriculum current with changes and developments on an annual basis. Conceptual design and technical skill are combined to produce a competitive portfolio. Problem solving, strategy development, and powerful use of typography and visuals achieve our communication solutions.

Every year, the Seattle Central Foundation raises essential funds and creates endowments for student scholarships, tutoring, emergency assistance, faculty development and student programs at Seattle Central College.
Our first year design students took up on the challenge by creating assets for the Believe Gala and Gillian Levine 's animation was the feature video for the evening! Great work, Gillian!

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Let's talk about the type treatment used for the #Portshowlio2017 logo, Neue Haas Unica!

Unica was an attempt at creating the ultimate sans-serif. It was a hybrid of Helvetica, Univers and Akzidenz Grotestk designed by Swiss type design trio, Team ’77 (André Gürtler, Christian Mengelt and Erich Gschwind).

“Unica was designed to be different,” said André Gürtler; “sharper than Helvetica, warmer than Univers, cleaner than Akzidenz.”

Released in 1980, Unica was clean, understated and elegant. However, it was shortly entailed in a dispute over ownership and disappeared from the market. Thanks to Monotype’s Toshi Omagri, Unica was given a fresh, digital life in 2015.

The Class of 2017 has been hard at work designing an identity that best represents what they bring to the table. From stunning photography to vibrant visual design, the graduating class is proud to present the #Portshowlio2017 logo! Stay tuned in the upcoming weeks for more updates!
