As the summer comes to an end, taking care of your child’s teeth is an important part of the daily routine. Research shows “poor oral health can mean missed school and lower grades.”

Tooth decay is preventable, but continues to be the most chronic disease in children.A dental infection and pain can cause problems with your child’s daily activities, such as sleeping, eating and learning, which can lead to an un-fun school year. Start your child’s school year off right with these 8 helpful tips.

1. See the Dentist
Set up your child’s next dental check-up.

2. Establish Healthy Habits
Make sure your child is brushing 2 times a day

3. Don’t eat after brushing teeth
This is especially important before bedtime, as salivary flow decreases while they sleep and teeth become more vulnerable to cavities.

4. Use Fluoride toothpaste
Kids over the age of 3 can use fluoride toothpaste. If your child wont spit, or eats the toothpaste, only use a rice grain amount. Once your child can spit, only a pea size amount of toothpaste is needed.

5. Eat Nutritious Foods
Encourage healthy eating. Tooth friendly snacks include fruit, string cheese, vegetables, unsweetened applesauce and nuts. Avoid sticky foods, such as candy, fruit roll ups, and granola bars. These foods stick to teeth surfaces and cause decay.

6. Don’t nibble food or sip continuously
Allowing time between snacking and sipping allows saliva to neutralize acids and repair teeth.

7. Drink Water
Choose water for your child instead of drinks sweetened with sugar. If your child wants a sweeter drink, try adding fresh sliced fruit such as lemons or strawberries.

8. Ask About Sealants
Dental sealants can also protect your children’s teeth from cavities. Sealants, which are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, act as a shield between the tooth and harmful bacteria.

Finally, make sure your child visits our office approximately every six months for a checkup and routine cleaning! Call today to schedule their next dental check-up! 206.935.5522

September - Fall Into Good Oral Health Habits

When the days get a little shorter and the weather gets a bit crisp, it can only mean one thing—football! Whether you’re grilling in a stadium parking lot or just having some friends over to watch the big game, here are a few tips to keep your events tooth-friendly.

Hamburgers and hot dogs are staples, however it would be a touchdown for your teeth if you opted for grilling vegetables, fish, and lean meats instead. Lean red meat contains iron, which is beneficial for your oral health. (An iron deficiency can actually lead to sores on the inside of your mouth.) Chicken and turkey both contain niacin. A lack of niacin can result in bad breath and mouth sores.

If you don’t grill veggies, consider a raw vegetable tray instead, which you can snack on guilt free with each touchdown! Fiber-rich vegetables stimulate saliva flow, which washes sugars and bacteria away from your teeth, helping to prevent cavities. Carrots and broccoli are particularly high in fiber.

Crackers and cheese are always popular options, and there’s no reason not to enjoy them cheering your team on. Cheese is a good source of calcium, which helps put minerals back in your teeth and choose whole-grain or whole-wheat crackers for the win!

As for sweet treats, bypass the typical fare like gooey brownies and sugar-packed cookies, try a sugar free option. If baked goods aren’t your thing, sliced fruit with a healthy yogurt dip also makes a great alternative.

If you do decide to indulge in some football fare that’s not so healthy, be sure to brush afterward—or at least swish with a little water if you don’t happen to have a toothbrush handy.

Happy football season and go Hawks!!!
