The University of Washington School of Dentistry

The University of Washington School of Dentistry, one of only two dental schools in the Pacific Northwest, is a worldwide leader in dental education and research, consistently ranking in the top tier of U.S. dental schools for National Institutes of Health funding. The school furnishes comprehensive clinical care, including all dental specialties and unique programs such as DECOD for people with disabilities; the Dental Fears Research Clinic; and Advanced General Dentistry, whose students treat medically compromised patients.

An evening that celebrated excellence: Congratulations to the newest inductees in the UW's Sigma Sigma chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, dentistry's equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa. To stand out in this fashion at our School of Dentistry, which is ferociously competitive even to enter, is quite an achievement. Along with the students recognized at last week's OKU banquet, the chapter inducted Dr. Randall Maebo as a faculty member and Carol Brown, our Director of Student Services, as an honorary member. In addition, Paul Lutgen received the Dr. William S. Kramer Award of Excellence, given to a rising third-year dental student who has demonstrated scholarship, character, and the potential promise for advancement of dentistry and service to humanity.

[05/16/17]   Our Department of Endodontics residents often stand out during presentations at the annual meeting of the American Association of Endodontists, and this year was no exception. Competing against endodontics residents from around the United States, Dr. Esther Chen and Dr. Erik Balinghasay won first place for their table clinic presentation at the AAE annual meetings late last month in New Orleans. The winners were mentored by Drs. Vanessa Chrepa and Dr. Avina Paranjpe and Dr. James Johnson, chair of the department. Congratulations to all on this outstanding effort!

We take great pride in announcing that our fourth-year student Timothee Cousin has won this year's Ozar-Hasegawa Ethics Award presented by the American Society for Dental Ethics to a dental or dental hygiene student. Timothee won the award for his essay discussing the unusually difficult ethical problems posed by a patient he treated as a third-year student. The issues included the patient's competence to decide on the best course of treatment; his inclination to self-medicate with alcohol; an outside dentist's previous use of inadequate materials to fabricate crowns; the patient's severe underlying health issues, including advanced gum disease and sciatica; and more. Timothee's exceptionally thoughtful treatment of this case showed not only the thorny challenges that dentists often wrestle with, but a well-considered response that put the patient's needs first. Well done, Timothee!

[05/05/17]   Dentists and dental students: Treat yourself to valuable insights into clinical practice with Dr. Daniel Cook of our faculty from 7:30 to 8:20 on Friday, May 19. Dr. Cook will present the next installment of our Pediatric Dentistry Grand Rounds lecture series in Room T-473 of the UW Health Sciences Building. His talk is titled "The Sealant Dilemma: an Exposure to a Thinking Clinical Practice.” Dr. Cook boasts a wealth of experience that spans more than 45 years. He's a past president of the American Academy of Dental Practice Administration and the Washington State Academy of Pediatric Dentists, and is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Breakfast will be provided by our Department of Pediatric Dentistry faculty. Don't miss this useful and interesting discussion!

We honored two outstanding UW dental alumni at our annual Dean's Club dinner on Saturday at Seattle's Museum of Flight. Dr. Dave Minahan received our 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award and Dr. Deck Barnes received the 2017 Dean's Club Honorary Lifetime Member Award. Members of the Husky Marching Band gave a rousing performance, and we had a special appearance by Dubs, the UW mascot and scene-stealer par excellence. A fun night in a dramatic setting!

Dr. Sara Gordon to join national leadership training program-

Congratulations to Dr. Sara Gordon, our Associate Dean of Academic Affairs! She's been chosen as a 2017-18 Fellow of the prestigious Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women, which is run by the Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. Since its founding in 1995, ELAM has become a conduit for women to the top ranks of academic medicine and dentistry. We're extremely proud of this recognition for Dr. Gordon.

On Thursday, the UW Department of Oral Health Sciences held a retirement celebration for one of its most impactful researchers of the last few decades. Dr. Philip Weinstein, a psychologist who came to the UW in 1971, has conducted widely influential studies on dental phobias, motivational interviewing, and caries in children, among other subjects. Thirty-five years ago, he was one of the founders of our Dental Fears Research Clinic, a unique resource that helps fearful patients overcome their phobias while receiving dental treatment. His work on fluoride varnish helped popularize the use of this highly effective decay-prevention treatment for children. Dr. Weinstein retires as Professor Emeritus of Oral Health Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Psychology at the UW. He has been director of the UW's Dental Behavioral Science Research Program and co-director of the Fears clinic, where he has maintained a private practice. His work has improved the health and lives of thousands of patients, directly or indirectly, and we wish him well as he departs.

In February, several of our fourth-year students attended the Academy of Operative Dentistry annual meetings in Chicago. It's a great opportunity to meet and attend lectures by some of dentistry's foremost clinicians. We'd like to acknowledge the financial support of our faculty members who have made that attendance possible for the last few years: Dr. J. Martin Anderson, Dr. Daniel Chan, Dr. Tim Hess, Dr. Dana Otterholt, and Dr. Richard D. Tucker. The AOD meetings are a highlight of the students' experience, and we know they deeply appreciate our faculty's contribution.

Husky 100

Today we salute third-year dental student Ally Mueller, who has been named to the 2017 cohort of the Husky 100. Ally, a UW undergraduate who received her degree with high honors and competed in track and field, has found that dentistry gives her a platform to synthesize her undergraduate studies in architecture and biochemistry. The Husky 100 represents the very best of the University of Washington, and we're proud that Ally is representing the School of Dentistry.
