UW SNMA - Diversifying the Face of Medicine

We hosted our last DFAD event of the 2016-2017 school year at Dale Turner YMCA and had a blast! We had the pleasure of working with a mix of 30 middle and high school students from the Shoreline area.

Our morning session consisted of stations with:
- Rehab
- Gross pathology organs
- Physical exam

Our lunch was generously provided by Dale Turner YMCA.

Our afternoon session consisted of stations with:
- Suturing bananas
- Interviewing a patient
- Intubation

We ended the day by splitting our participants into two groups for Q&A panel of medical students, residents, and attending physicians!

A few 4th years had the opportunity to table at Franklin High School's Career Fair. There was a lot of interest in medicine, nursing and pharmacology!

We hosted our very FIRST Doctor for a Day workshop at Africatown in 2013! We absolutely love partnering with Wyking and the Africatown organization.

Today we held our 3rd annual Africatown workshop and had the pleasure of working with a great mix of 30 middle and high school students of color. We were all very impressed with the students who came to participate. They are smart, highly capable, passionate, and dedicated to improving their communities.

Our morning session consisted of stations with:
- PT, OT, and Orthotic & Prosthetic students from UW
- Respiratory therapist from Harborview
- Medical students doing physical exam skills
- Medical students showing gross pathology human organs

For lunch we had sandwiches from Costco, paid for by UW CEDI and UW SNMA

Our afternoon session consisted of stations with:
- Medical students demonstrating how to intubate on dummies
- Medical students doing a mock patient interview

We ended the day with an inspiring talk given by Dr. Ben Danielson, Medical Director at Odessa Brown Children's Clinic

We're already looking forward to our 4th annual event at Africatown next year!
