"PLEASE FORWARD WIDELY!

This coming Tuesday, the Seattle City Council will hold a public hearing at Seattle University. They will consider an ordinance deciding whether communities opposed to the youth jail have the right to appeal the decision to grant a permit to build it. City Council members need to hear from YOU as to why they should pass the ordinance, so the appeal can move forward and the new youth jail can be STOPPED. Read on for more info!

WHAT: Seattle City Council Hearing on Ordinance Change to allow Youth Jail Appeal

WHERE: Seattle University, Student Center, Room 210

901 12th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 16th at 6 pm

What's this hearing about and why do you need to be there?
In order to build the youth jail and courts, King County needs permission from the City of Seattle, including a critical "Master Use Permit." Without this permit, the jail building project could not move forward. This past December, the City of Seattle's Department of Construction granted King County this permit. Over 60 community groups appealed the grant of the permit, and are ready to argue why spending $210 million to build a new kiddie jail and courts fails our youth.

King County does not want this appeal heard. On March 1st, at King County's request, the Hearing Examiner dismissed the appeal, attempting to silence community voices. The Hearing Examiner claimed that the city of Seattle's own ordinance does not require an appeal to be heard. We know that's not true, and so do City of Seattle Council Members O'Brien and Sawant. They introduced an ordinance confirming what we've known all along – that the appeal should have moved forward and that the 60+ community organizations deserve to have our voices heard.

King County knows the tide has turned and they want to stop jail opponents from speaking out against this racist building project. That's why they requested our appeal be dismissed.

That's also why we need to show up at this Tuesday's City Council hearing, and make sure the City Council hears that they must pass the ordinance that would allow the appeal to move forward.

It's past time that this youth and court jail building project got shut down. Show up on Tuesday, and let the Council know why they need to make it happen."
