Somewhere out there is a child who will appreciate this riddle.

Drinking CARBONATED beverages can be hard on your teeth. Do you drink carbonated, sparkling flavored waters?!! If you have noticed an increase in cavities or tooth sensitivity (but are otherwise pretty healthy), these popular beverages might be the culprit.

When turning plain water into carbonated water, it is still slightly acidic. Carbon dioxide dissolves slightly in water to form carbonic acid. When adding flavors, especially fruit flavors, other acids are added making the carbonated beverage even worse for your teeth. Sparkling waters are not as awful as fizzy sodas, but they're not neutral like water. That carbonic acid demineralizes teeth, which then makes them more susceptible to cavities.

If you think those sparkling waters are a good alternative to plain water, especially for your kids, please reconsider. We have seen an uptick in cavities in our health-conscious patients due to the assumption that "no added sugar" somehow means healthy. Acid can be as harsh on your teeth as sugar.

If you have visited our Queen Anne location, you may have noticed the sign for our Seattle Headache Center. Did you know that we have helped to provide chronic headache relief to a number of our patients? Do you have chronic headaches? Do you have vertigo? Tinnitus? TMJ issues? Feel free to follow our other page, which is dedicated to more information on this subject or just ask Dr. Brenner or Dr. Nguyen for more information.
