Hello from Northwest Film Forum!
I’m writing to let you know about an upcoming film at the Forum that may interest you. Karl Marx City (Apr. 28 at 8pm) is filmmaker Petra Epperlein’s haunting search behind what remains of the iron curtain. After her father’s sudden suicide in 1999, she returns to her hometown seeking the answer to a dark question: was he a Stasi informant? Epperlein and her co-director and husband Michael Tucker will be in attendance for a Q&A!
Karl Marx City follows Epperlein, transparently anti-spy with her comically large, fuzzy microphone in hand, on a bold and unequivocal inquiry into Cold War surveillance. The film is intercut with declassified Stasi footage and audio from the German Democratic Republic, whose near-total coverage of German life eroded any notion of a right to privacy that its populace may have had. Curious? Read more in David Ehrlich’s review for IndieWire.
If Karl Marx City strikes a chord with you, come by for our Post-’68 Apocalypse: Four Radical Visions series! The first four Wednesdays in May, we’ll be showing a batch of Nixon-era, politically dystopian films that each forecast a very unfavorable near-future resolution of the Cold War.
