Cloudlift Cellars 2014 Zephyr Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre, Columbia Valley, $34

Great Northwest Wine has some very nice comments about our soon to be released 2014 Zephyr! Arianses Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope near Desert Aire, a favored site by a number of Seattle’s urban winemakers, is farmed by talented viticulturist Tom Merkle. His work provides the backbone of Syrah (44%) for this GSM-style blend with equal parts of Grenache and Mourvèdre from Elephant Mountain…

Washington Wine Month at Cloudlift

March means Taste Washington and Ascent is our Wine of the month!

It's a rainy day in Seattle but the tasting room is warm and dry. Stop on by for a Cloudlift Cellars tasting!

The wines are open and the truffles have arrived! Wine paired with chocolate truffles at Cloudlift Saturday and Sunday!

Wine and Chocolate pairings at Cloudlift! Artisan confectioner Reona will pair a unique chocolate with each wine this weekend only. This is our 5th year together and one of our most popular tastings. Come visit from 1-5 on Saturday and Sunday the 11th and 12th.

In mid January, we spent an afternoon visiting some wineries in South Seattle. Our first stop was at Cloudlift Cellars on the corner of Fourth Avenue South and Lucille Street in Georgetown. The owner-winemaker is Tom Stangeland, a graduate of the Northwest Wine Academy.

2013 Cloudlift Cellars “Panorama” Merlot, Columbia Valley ($26)
Composed of 78% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, this offers a deep ruby-garnet color and rich aromas of blackberry, cherry, plum, red roses, mulberry, sweet tobacco and sage. The flavors are pleasantly supple, yet well defined, with notes of licorice, Swiss chocolate, black tea and earthy minerals. The back picks up pressed berries, roasted nuts, mocha and toffee on the way to a supple yet firm tannin finish. 18.5/20 points.

2013 Cloudlift Cellars “Ascent” Cabernet Franc, Horse Heaven Hills ($27)
This combination of 76% Alder Ridge Cab Franc with 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Petit Verdot shows a deep ruby color and a rich, smoky nose of raspberry, cherry, and plum with scents of rosebuds, brambles, tobacco, sage and pepper. The flavors mirror the aromatics with dark fruits are intermixed with licorice, dark cocoa, French roast and Horse Heaven scorched earth. On the back, the wine turns chewy textured with notes of roasted berries and nuts, mocha, toffee, and recurring earth, followed by a savory ripe tannin finish. 18.5/20 points.

2013 Cloudlift Cellars “Halcyon” Cabernet Sauvignon, Horse Heaven Hills ($28)
Blended with 8% Merlot, this Cabernet displays a deep brick red color and rich aromas of blackberries, cherries, plums, black roses, tobacco, sandalwood, rosemary and spiced incense. The palate shows the warmth of the 2013 vintage, with supple, yet well delineated dark fruit flavors that are marked by notes of licorice, cocoa, French roast and minerals. The back picks up macerated berries, roasted walnuts, mocha and pencil lead followed by a ripe tannin finish. 18.5/20 points.

2013 Cloudlift Cellars “Stratus” Petit Verdot, Yakima Valley ($32)
Composed of 90% Elephant Mountain Petit Verdot and 10% Merlot, this wine shows the varietal traits of a deep crimson color and perfumed aromas of wild blackberry, blueberry, cassis, crushed roses, mulberry, orange peel and violets. The flavors, as well, are pleasing, with notes of red licorice, cocoa, French roast and minerals. The wine’s appeal continues on the back with sensations of pressed berries, toasted nuts, toffee and graphite, all leading deftly into a chewy, slightly grainy tannin finish. The overall balance gives it a plus. 18.5+/20 points.
